Second Big Ten/Big East Challenge Announced

NorthwesternST. PETERSBURG, FL – Following an inaugural event in which nearly 17,000 spectators attended games in a three-day period, the second Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been confirmed for the weekend of Feb. 26-28, 2010. The 2010 edition, to be held in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, FL, will feature 10 teams from each conference competing in 30 games and be managed by API Sports. Continue reading

PHILADELPHIA (5/31/09) – Temple senior outfielder Sean Barksdale (Glenolden, PA / Cardinal O’Hara) and Villanova junior right-hander Brian Streilein (Staten Island, NY / Brick Memorial) were named the Philadelphia Big Five Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices. PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – UConn scored six runs in the fifth inning to jump to a five-run lead en route to its 33rd win of the season as the Huskies downed Villanova 16-6 in their final regular season game of the 2009 season. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Joe Agreste and freshman left-hander Jonathan Jones had stellar performances to lead the West Virginia University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Cincinnati on Saturday at Hawley Field.

Agreste’s four-RBI effort led the Mountaineers (33-14, 15-8) to a 15-9 victory in a back-and-forth battle in game one, and Jones (6-1) held a powerful Cincinnati offense to just one run on seven hits while striking out seven in 7.1 innings pitched in WVU’s 9-2 win in game two. Continue reading

TAMPA, Fla. – Senior Michael Hill (Proctorville, Ohio/Fairland) pitched eight innings and struck out eight men leading the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 4-2 win over USF Saturday night at Red McEwen Field. The UC win handed USF its first home loss in conference play. Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) entered the game in the ninth inning and retired the side in order earning his seventh save of the season. The save also gave Geglein nine career saves in BIG EAST-only action, which is tied for 10th in BIG EAST history. Continue reading
