2011 CBD Season Preview: Horizon League

Wright State won the 2010 Horizon League Regular Season title with a 17-6 overall record. Milwaukee finished in the runners-up position a game back with a 17-8 record while Illinois-Chicago finished third with a 15-9 record. Valparaiso came in fourth at 9-10 and Butler finished 11-13 for a fifth place finish. Valpo extends Tracy Woodson’s Contract

WoodsonValpo Valparaiso University head baseball coach Tracy Woodson has signed a four-year contract that will extend through the 2014 season Mark LaBarbera, director of athletics has announced.

“Tracy has built our program into a Horizon League contender,” LaBarbera said. “The baseball team continues to succeed both on the field and in the classroom, and this is a direct result of Coach Woodson’s leadership. We are excited to know that he will be here for the next several years.”

Freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) (4-for-5) drove in a career-high six runs, highlighted by his first grand slam, as No. 6 Florida (9-2) completed a two-game sweep of Illinois State (4-7) with an 8-0 victory on Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium. Maddox was 5-for-9 (.556) in the series with three extra-base hits and tallied nine RBI.

Sophomore Anthony DeSclafani (Freehold, N.J.) (1-1) earned his first win of the campaign with 5.1 strong innings in which he registered a season-high six strikeouts and gave up one hit. The trio of freshman Steven Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.), freshman Michael Heller (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Justin Poovey (Granite Falls, N.C.) permitted one hit over the final 3.2 innings to nail down the Gators’ first shutout since 12-0 triumph over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 24, 2009.
