Number 28 on our countdown is junior RHP Chad Sobotka from South Carolina-Upstate. The 6’6 righty was a four year letter winner at Riverview High School. As a senior, he went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA with him named the team’s MVP. Continue reading

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2012 USC Upstate Baseball schedule released today by head coach Matt Fincher features 10 games against 2011 NCAA Tournament participants and 11 others against squads that won 34 or more games a season ago.
The Spartans open the season with an 11-game homestand, beginning with Eastern Michigan on Feb. 17. Upstate will also host Ball State and Kentucky during opening weekend. Continue reading

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Nothing is coming easy – or free – for Florida State’s baseball opponents four games into the 2011 season.
The Seminoles improved to 4-0 on the year Tuesday with a 5-3 victory over rival Jacksonville at Dick Howser Stadium, thanks in large part to another outstanding pitching performance. MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun’s reigning regular-season and tournament champions, FGCU and Mercer shared the top spot in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced on Thursday. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman, the 2010 Player of the Year unanimously earned the preseason tag while FGCU’s all-conference starting pitcher, Richie Erath, received the Preseason Pitcher of the Year honor. The 2010 Atlantic Sun regular season saw Florida Gulf Coast dominate the conference with a 25-5 conference mark as second place Mercer finished six games back with a 16-11 record. East Tennessee State finished a game behind the Bears with a 15-12 record. North Florida and Jacksonville finished tied for fourth place with a 14-12 record. Stetson rounded out the qualifiers for the Atlantic Sun postseason tournament with a 14-13 record. Belmont at 13-13, Kennesaw State at 12-15, Lipscomb at 9-17, and Campbell at 8-19 were on the outside looking in at the postseason tournament while USC-Upstate went 8-19 as they were not eligible for the A-Sun tournament as they are undergoing an NCAA Reclassifying period. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team will continue its theme of tough schedules as the Spartans will play a total of 11 games against five teams finished in the RPI top-45 a season ago as head coach Matt Fincher has announced today the 2011 baseball schedule.
Upstate will face defending national champion South Carolina, who finished with a RPI of seven, as well as College of Charleston (21), The Citadel (31), Virginia Tech (35) and Florida Gulf Coast (42).

#3 Georgia Tech 18 Georgia Southern 4
ATLANTA - Thomas Nichols had five hits, including two doubles and two home runs, to lead the third-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (33-5) to an 18-4 victory over Georgia Southern (21-17) in midweek action Wednesday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The five hits were a career-high for Nichols, who also added a career high five RBI in his 5-for-5 performance. Four of his hits went for extra bases, as he grabbed two doubles in addition to his sixth and seventh home runs of the season.

#5 LSU 14 Northwestern State 3
SHREVEPORT, La. — Shortstop Austin Nola was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, and the fifth-ranked Tigers pounded 15 hits to top No. 30 Northwestern State, 14-3, Tuesday night at Fair Grounds Field.
The Tigers (31-6) will be back in action Wednesday when they play host to Northwestern State (25-11) in Alex Box Stadium at 6:30 p.m., as the two teams will meet for the second time in two days.

#16 Arkansas 3 McNesse State 2
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Brett Eibner had two hits and scored the eventual game-winning run, while the Razorback pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts Tuesday night as the No. 16 University of Arkansas baseball team held off McNeese State, 3-2, at Cowboy Diamond in Lake Charles, La. TJ Forrest picked up the win in a relief appearance and Jeremy Heatley earned his first career save. The Cowboys had the game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth but Blake Ellender grounded into the game-ending double play to send Arkansas (14-5) to victory.
"It was a well-played game," head coach Dave Van Horn said. "They were one big hit away from beating us and we were one big hit from taking a three- or four-run lead. We took advantage of the few hits we got. Both teams played solid defense and made a couple of nice plays."
