2014 Top 100 Players Countdown: 83. Trent Thornton (UNC)

College Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the top 100 players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today at number 83 with UNC RHP Trent Thornton. In his first season with the Tar Heels Thornton quickly proved himself as a top notch starter with three above average pitches and a command of the zone that is usually only seen from veteran players. Thornton saw action in several roles for the Tar Heels as he set the UNC freshman record for wins (12) and tied the freshman record for saves (8) in his 91.2 innings of work. Thornton posted a 1.37 ERA, the seventh-lowest mark in the country. Thornton also earned freshman All-American honors as well as a spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Continue reading

Summer League Report: Edition Five- The Baylor Bears

HYANNIS, Mass. — Baylor infielder Raynor Campbell was named to the 2008 Cape Cod League All-Star Game, the league announced recently. Campbell, a member of the Wareham Gatemen, was one of two non-pitcher reserves selected for the West All-Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass. The game will be televised on the New England Sports Network (NESN), available on DirecTV channels 623 and 624 (HD).

Campbell, who will be a junior at Baylor next season, ranks seventh in the Cape Cod League with a team-best .342 batting average (38-for-111). His batting average is exactly 100 points higher than the Wareham team average (.242), and Campbell has provided 14 percent of Wareham’s hits this summer. He also has two home runs, nine RBI, 20 runs scored. Campbell ranks fourth in the Cape with a .438 on base percentage.

(OSTRAVA, Czech Republic) – Josh Fellhauer (Cal State Fullerton; Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) capped a four-run seventh with a three-run homer to straightaway center field as the USA Baseball National Team shutout the Czech National Team 5-0 in a “friendly” game late Wednesday afternoon at Ostrava Field. Team USA, which played as the home team, improved to 16-0 on its 2008 tour with the victory.

Matt den Dekker (Florida; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) reached on an error to leadoff the first inning and later scored on a groundout from Jared Clark (Cal State Fullerton; Castaic, Calif.).
