The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with various head coaches around the nation. We recently were able to talk with San Diego’s Rich Hill. He is entering his 21st collegiate season while being in charge of San Diego for the last ten seasons. He led the team to the NCAA Tournament last season when they won the West Coast Conference. We continue the list today with junior right handed pitcher Matt Thomson from the University of San Diego. He is a 6-4 195 pound righty from Santa Rosa California. SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego head baseball coach Rich Hill has announced the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent to play baseball at USD beginning in the 2010 season, and four of them have been named in Baseball America’s top-100 recruits. The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with Sophomore Sammy Solis from the University of San Diego checking in at the 46th spot in our countdown. He is a 6-5 228 pound lefthander from Litchfield Park, Arizona and Agua Fria high school where he played four years of varsity baseball where he had a 25-8 record with a 398 strikeouts which is fourth best in the history of Arizona high school baseball. MLB and College Relations getting better?

I got an email today from the San Diego Media Relations department telling me that Rich Hill of the University of San Diego has been one of the eleven collegiate coaches selected to meet with scouting directors and other MLB personnel. A couple of the other big name coaches are Ray Tanner of South Carolina, Augie Garrido of Texas, and Pat Casey of Oregon State. They are going to discuss how the relationship between collegiate baseball and MLB baseball can be improved with the sharing of information on potential draftees and other issues. NICHOLLS STATE BASEBALL BEGINS FALL PRACTICE SESSIONS

With 15 returners and 23 newcomers, the Colonel baseball team took to the field for the first time this week in preparation for the 2009 season.

“I think we’ve had three really good practices to open the fall and the thing that is really evident about this team already is that we definitely have team speed,” remarked head coach Chip Durham. “We have position players who can really run and that makes us feel really good about being in a situation where, as we continue to develop over the fall, we really have a chance to play defense well.”

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ­ The University of San Diego head baseball coach, Rich Hill, has announced the Toreros’ 2009 schedule.

The Toreros’ schedule features yet another strong caliber of opponents, much like the 2008 season. Eight NCAA Tournament participants including the University of Oklahoma, Long Beach State, Rice, Pepperdine University, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Stanford University and Arizona State highlight USD’s schedule. The Toreros will compete in 16 games against this top competition.
