San Diego Regional Day 1 Recap

Fresno State shocked the host Toreros by knocking them off 6-2 in the NCAA Regional. Fresno will face Fullerton on Saturday while San Diego will face Minnesota.

Fullerton 7 Minnesota 1

The Cal-State Fullerton Titans picked up a 7-1 victory over Minnesota in the opening game of the San Diego Regional. Fullerton will face Fresno State in the Winners bracket while Minnesota will face San Diego.

San Diego Regional

The San Diego Toreros will host the NCAA Regional at their crosstown rival San Diego State’s Tony Gwynn Stadium. They will be joined by Minnesota, Cal-State Fullerton, and Fresno State.

The Toreros are led by All-American candidate Brian Matusz who leads the team with a 10-3 record and a 2.73 ERA. He has also struck out 156 batters in 115 innings this season. The offense is led by Shane Buschini who has a .356 average and 14 homers on the season. They will open up against Fresno State at 8pm PDT.

Cal-State Fullerton

The Titans enter the weekend with a 33-23 record. Wes Roemer came into the season as the expected ace of the pitching staff but has been up and down through the year. He has a 9-6 record with a 3.51 ERA. Clark Hardman is the leading hitter on the team with a .378 average. They open the tournament against Minnesota at 4 pm PDT.

Cal-State Fullerton Tourney Notes

Minnesota

The Gophers (40-16) received an at-large berth after advancing to the Big Ten Championship game but lost to Ohio State 4-2. They are led on offense by Mike Mee who is hitting .397. The top pitcher for Minnesota is Dustin Brabender who has a 5-1 record. They open against Fullerton at 4 pm PDT.

Fresno State

The Bulldogs enter the weekend as the champions of the WAC after knocking off Nevada 17-4. They have five hitters who are batting over .304 on the season which is led by Erik Wetzel (.348 BA). The top pitcher for Fresno State is Justin Wilson who is 8-5 with a 3.19 ERA. They open the tournament at 8 pm PDT on Friday.

The CBB predicts San Diego to come through the Regional with their strong pitchers but watch out for Fullerton to make a run with their strong coaching staff.

Riverside knocks off San Diego

The UC-Riverside Highlanders picked up a 9-4 victory over San Diego in college baseball action Tuesday. The Highlanders received a 2-3 performance from Jaime Pedroza who also scored three runs in the game. Matt Vass picked up a key three-run homer in the second inning to provide some power to the offense. Chad Blauer started the game for San Diego and only lasted 1.1 innings while giving up five runs (all earned) to pick up his first loss of the season. UC-Riverside starter Marc Rzepczynski pitched 5.0 innings while only giving up three runs to get his third victory of the season against no losses.

NCBWA names Pro-Line Athletic Players of the Week

The NCBWA has named Mike Bianucci of Auburn the National Player of the Week and Brian Matusz the National Pitcher of the week for the time period ending on February 25th. Bianucci led Auburn to a 3-0 record at the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament hosted by South Alabama this weekend. He hit .667 (8 for 12) with 2 homers and drove in seven runs. Brian Matusz pitched another stellar game by going seven innings while only letting up one hit and striking out ten hitters against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday evening.

Wake denies San Diego a sweep

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons picked up a 5-3 victory on Sunday to salvage one game out of their series with the University of San Diego. Garrett Bullock pitched very well for the Deacons to but did not pick up the win. He pitched 7.0 innings while giving up three runs (only one earned) while scattering seven hits, two HBP, and a balk. Josh Ellis picked up the win for the Deacs by going the final 2.0 innings while giving up only a hit and a walk. Evan Ocheltree hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to provide the first of the two runs in the top of the ninth. Eric Williams provided the other RBI in the ninth to drive home Ben Terry for the insurance run. Justin Snyder led the San Diego offense by going 2-4 on the day. Wake Forest now heads back to Winston-Salem where they will host Charlotte on Tuesday. The Toreros will play UC-Riverside on Tuesday. Matusz continues to dominate

The San Diego Toreros got a one hit seven inning performance from Brian Matusz in a 2-0 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Matusz struck out 10 batters in the game to continue to show that he is one of the top pitchers in college baseball this season. Matusz was followed by AJ Griffin who pitched two scoreless and hitless innings to pick up the save. San Diego scored runs on singles by Jordan Abruzzo in the first inning and Daniel Magness in the fourth. The teams will be back in action on Saturday at 1 pm Pacific.

Wake Forest visits San Diego

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will visit the Toreros of San Diego for a weekend set. Wake Forest is coming into the games with a 3-1 record after weekend sweep over Kent State and a mid-week loss to Appalachian State 10-9. San Diego enters with one of the best pitchers in the nation Brian Matusz who will start Friday night. The Toreros enter with a 9-4 record taking three out of four games against Virginia Commonwealth. The pitching match ups for the weekend will be Wake Forest’s Brad Kledzik (0-0, 9.00 ERA) facing off against San Diego’s Brian Matusz (2-0, 2.19 ERA). Saturday match-up will be Eric Nielsen (1-0, 5.68 ERA) for Wake and San Diego counters with Matt Couch (2-0, 4.12 ERA). The series finale is tentatively scheduled to have Wake send Garrett Bullock (1-0, 1.80 ERA) to face Josh Romanski (1-1, 6.38 ERA).

San Diego takes Rubber Game

San Diego took Game three of their series with the Texas Longhorns by a score of 4-1. Jordan Abruzzo and Shane Buschini both hit two run homers to lead the Toreros offense to the victory. Matt Couch got his first win on the young season by pitching 6.0 innings of one run baseball. Ricardo Pecina pitched two innings of hitless relief before handing the ball over to AJ Griffin who pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his second career save. James Russell picked up the loss for the Longhorns by going 7.0 innings and allowing Jordan Abruzzo’s two run homer. San Diego is back in action on Friday with a three game set with USC. Texas heads out to the west coast to take on Long Beach State next weekend but has a mid-week game against Texas-Arlington.

Texas takes Game 2

Nick Peoples led the Longhorns to a 13-8 victory over the Toreros. Peoples went 2-4 with five RBI’s. Preston Clark also gave the Longhorns a 3-5 performance with an RBI and two runs scored. Mike Metzger went 3-5 in the losing effort for the Toreros. Longhorns relief pitcher Adrian Alaniz picked up the victory for the Longhorns and Josh Romanski picked up the loss. The teams face off in the rubber game on Sunday.

San Diego knocks off Texas

Brian Matusz delivered a clutch performance as he led his Toreros to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Texas Longhorns. He pitched 5.2 innings only allowing 1 run and striking out eight batters. Matt Couch got the last two outs in the ninth to record his first save of the season. Justin Snyder led the offensive charge with a 3-5 performance including a home run. Texas starter Randy Boone only lasted 4.1 innings and gave up 5 runs (3 earned) and surrendered eight hits. Travis Tucker went 3-4 for the Longhorns in the losing effort. Both teams will face off again on Saturday.
