2014 Preseason Southern Conference Coaches and Media Poll

SoConLogoSPARTANBURG, S.C. – 2013 regular-season Southern Conference champion Western Carolina has been picked to defend its crown in 2014 in balloting of the league’s media and 10 head coaches.

The Catamounts, who went 39-20 overall and 23-7 in the league last season, picked up seven first-place votes and 78 points from the coaches, who could not vote for their own teams. WCU edged The Citadel, which earned 75 points and the remaining three first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. Western Carolina earned 167 points and 13 first-place votes from the media. 2014 Top 100 Players Countdown: 99. Max Povse (UNC Greensboro)

MaxPovseUNCGCollege Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today at number 99 with UNC Greensboro junior RHP Max Povse from Green Hope High School and Cary, North Carolina. He was a four varsity letterwinner at Green Hope High School and was drafted in the 42nd round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft where he won all-conference honors as a senior. He set a new school record by striking out 18 batters in just eight innings against Middle Creek. Continue reading


UNC-Greensboro releases 2013 Schedule

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team will play 32 games at home, including 19 of the first 21, as part of its 2013 schedule released in its entirety Wednesday by school officials. The Spartans will also face cross-town rival North Carolina A&T March 28 at Newbridge Bank Park – home of the South Atlantic League’s Greensboro Grasshoppers. Continue reading


UNCG adds Jerry Edwards and Matt Boykin to Coaching Staff

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jerry Edwards and Matt Boykin have been named assistant coaches for the UNCG baseball program, according to an announcement Tuesday by head coach Link Jarrett.

Edwards has been the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Kentucky University for the past four seasons after serving in the same capacity from 1999-2001 under former skipper Jim Ward. He was also the squad’s interim head coach in between the tenures of Ward and Elvis Dominguez. His efforts helped build the squad that won a share of the OVC regular season title in 2012. Link Jarrett named Head Coach at UNC-Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Link Jarrett, a two-time Assistant Coach of the Year award winner and offensive mastermind, has been named the second coach in UNCG baseball history, Director of Athletics Kim Record announced Wednesday. Jarrett brings 13 years of coaching experience to the program, including stops at Flager, Mercer, Florida State, East Carolina and Auburn. Continue reading


2012 CBD Season Preview: Southern Conference

2011 Season Review:

  • Tournament Champion: Georgia Southern
  • Regular Season Champion: Elon
  • Conference RPI: #15
  • Conference ISR: #16

In 2010 the Southern Conference had a conference record 3 teams (Citadel, CofC and Elon) get in a regional. However, in 2011 only the tournament champion Georgia Southern (36-26 overall and 18-12 SOCON) received a NCAA bid. Regular season champion Elon (36-21 overall and 23-7 SOCON) along with CofC (39-22 overall and 18-12 SOCON), and Samford (37-23 overall and 18-12 SOCON) came up just short of a regional. UNCG who won just 7 conference games in 2010 finished just one game behind Elon in regular season at 22-8 in conference and 34-20 overall. +14 games overall and an amazing +15 in conference. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches have selected College of Charleston as the preseason favorite to win the league championship in 2012 while the media representatives who cover the league have chosen Georgia Southern as the conference favorite. Continue reading


UNCG releases 2012 Schedule

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG will play 55 regular season games in 2012, including the first 16 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium, coach Mike Gaski announced on Wednesday.

The Spartans will open their season on Feb. 17 as they host Delaware State for a three-game series before hosting UNC Asheville on Feb. 21. Penn State will then come to town on Feb. 24 for a weekend series. Continue reading
