2011 Big South Preseason Poll Released

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the fourth consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.  In addition, the coaches voted Chanticleers’ redshirt-junior second baseman Tommy La Stella (Closter, N.J.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

2011 CBD Season Preview: Big South

The Big South was dominated last year by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as they went a perfect 25-0 on their way to the conference regular season title. The Liberty Flames came in second with a 19-8 conference mark. Radford finished in third place with a 15-11 record in the conference only a ½ game ahead of High Point for third place. VMI and Winthrop tied for fifth place with a 13-14 record while Gardner-Webb and UNC-Asheville tied for seventh with a 10-17 mark. Presbyterian College finished in ninth place with a 7-20 record while Charleston Southern rounded out of the conference with a 6-20 record. Continue reading

UNC-Asheville releases 2011 Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A game at defending national champion South Carolina plus 10 games at McCormick Field highlights the 2011 UNC Asheville baseball schedule that was released today by second-year Bulldog coach Tom Smith.

The 53-game schedule features 18 home games, including eight games on Asheville’s home campus of Greenwood Field plus the 10 dates at McCormick Field. The Bulldogs will open the 2011 season at Greenwood Field when they welcome Murray State for a three-game series (Feb. 18-20). Continue reading

MooneyhamStanford CARY, N.C. — Blue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Red squad 6-1 Thursday night in Game 3 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Complex (NTC).

With the win the Blue team improves to 1-1-1, while the Red falls to 1-1-1.

(www.BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville infielder Justin Schumer (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named the Big South Conference’s Choice Hotels Player of the Week, and Presbyterian College hurler Andrew Foushee (Augusta, Ga.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played the final week of the regular-season, it was announced today by the League office.

Big South Announces Seedings For Baseball Championship

BigSouthLogo CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the fourth consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years, Coastal Carolina is the No. 1 seed in the Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship, which will be contested May 25-29 at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.  The Chanticleers, ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in three polls this week, won the outright 2010 regular-season championship with a 25-0 Conference mark to become just the second team in Big South history to go undefeated in the Conference season, joining the 1988 Coastal Carolina club that finished 15-0.  Coastal Carolina’s 25 Big South wins has set the League’s single-season record, and the Chanticleers have won their fifth regular-season Big South baseball crown in six years and sixth in nine seasons.

Freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead No. 4 Florida (38-12) to a 9-3 victory over UNF (29-23) on Tuesday night in front of 3,314 fans at McKethan Stadium. In addition, the rookie belted his team-leading 17th homer, a two-run shot in the fifth, to establish a Gator freshman single-season record. UF extended its winning streak to five games and has captured 12 of its last 13 outings.  

“We got a really good start from Tommy Toledo and North Florida has always played us tough,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan. “They’re scrappy and they’re well coached by Dusty Rhodes. It was good to get on the board early and get a 5-0 lead. I thought it gave us a little cushion and it was great to get a lot of players in there tonight. Overall, it was a great team effort and a positive way to end the regular season here at home.”

UNC Asheville releases 2010 Schedule

AustinGraham ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Fourteen games at McCormick Field, a game at Tennessee plus a first-time meeting with Mars Hill highlights the 2010 UNC Asheville baseball schedule that was announced by first-year Bulldog coach Tom Smith on Friday.

"Our schedule will be tough but it a schedule that I think we can be competitive with," commented Smith. "We’re excited about playing 14 games at McCormick Field and can’t thank the city of Asheville, and the Asheville Tourists enough for allowing us to play down there."

UNC-Asheville adds Aaron Rembert to Coaching Staff

AaronRembert ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Head Baseball Coach Tom Smith has announced the hiring of former Bulldog pitcher Aaron Rembert as an assistant coach upon approval of the Board of Trustees. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon.

Rembert has served as the top assistant coach at nearby Mars Hill College for the past four years. He was one of the best pitchers to ever pitch at UNC Asheville as he was a member of the Bulldog program from 2000-2004.
