NCBWA announces Players of the Week (April 9th)

NCBWA LogoMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 7, today. UNC Asheville senior catcher Ian Graham was named National Hitter of the Week, while Marshall junior right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair was named National Pitcher of the Week. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty’s and Coastal Carolina’s baseball programs have been chosen as the favorites in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll for the 2013 season in a vote of the League’s Head Coaches, the League announced today. In addition, the coaches voted Campbell’s Michael Felton and Jeff Kemp of Radford the Conference’s Preseason Co-Players of the Year, while Aaron Burke of Coastal Carolina was named the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the fifth consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, the coaches voted Presbyterian sophomore catcher/first baseman Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Josh Conway (Smithsburg, Md.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior right-hander Bryant Gaines threw six innings of two-run ball and No. 9 North Carolina (39-10) scored a pair of runs in the final two innings to post a 4-2 victory over visiting UNC Asheville (15-30) Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Big South

The Big South was dominated last year by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as they went a perfect 25-0 on their way to the conference regular season title. The Liberty Flames came in second with a 19-8 conference mark. Radford finished in third place with a 15-11 record in the conference only a ½ game ahead of High Point for third place. VMI and Winthrop tied for fifth place with a 13-14 record while Gardner-Webb and UNC-Asheville tied for seventh with a 10-17 mark. Presbyterian College finished in ninth place with a 7-20 record while Charleston Southern rounded out of the conference with a 6-20 record. Read the rest of this entry »

UNC-Asheville releases 2011 Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A game at defending national champion South Carolina plus 10 games at McCormick Field highlights the 2011 UNC Asheville baseball schedule that was released today by second-year Bulldog coach Tom Smith.

The 53-game schedule features 18 home games, including eight games on Asheville’s home campus of Greenwood Field plus the 10 dates at McCormick Field. The Bulldogs will open the 2011 season at Greenwood Field when they welcome Murray State for a three-game series (Feb. 18-20). Read the rest of this entry »
