MLBTradeRumors.com reports that Houston Astros first round pick George Springer met with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League on Saturday. Springer was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft after an outstanding career at UConn where he led the Huskies to an appearance in the Super Regionals. Since the Cape Cod Baseball League announced their 2011 All-Star Game rosters on Friday, lets take a look at what conferences and college programs have had the most success this summer. The leading conference this year is the Pac-10 conference which features eight players from seven different school. Coming in second place is the SEC which has six players from four different schools. Interesting enough, the ACC and Big East conference both have four players in the game this year which speaks to how strong the the Big East over the last couple of seasons. Heading into the 2011 season, the real talk around the UConn program was the fact they had two absolute studs in George Springer and Matt Barnes. Both of these young men went in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft to the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox respectively. The rest of the Huskies squad was extremely talented including outfielder John Andreoli. He ended up finishing the year with a .317 average with 31 RBI as he started all 66 games for the Huskies. UConn is coming off four straight wins to grab the Clemson Regional after losing their opener to Coastal Carolina. CLEMSON, S.C. – With a 14-1 win over Clemson on Monday night in the 2011 NCAA Clemson Regional Championship the Huskies now advance to the Super Regional where they will face South Carolina in Columbia beginning on Saturday, June 11.
Tonight’s win marks the fourth-straight victory for the Huskies in NCAA Tournament action as they improve to 45-18-1 on the year. The Super Regional will consist of a best-of-three series with the winner moving on to the College World Series in Omaha. CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman Brian Ward threw a career-high eight innings as the UConn baseball team downed Coastal Carolina 12-6 to stay alive in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
