One of the biggest upsets of the day was between two ACC teams with Boston College beating Virginia 5-3 behind sophomore Eric Stevens who pitched six innings giving up three runs on seven hits. STORRS, Conn. (January 31, 2012) – The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics has established “Stadium Enhancement/Construction” funds in the sports of soccer, baseball and softball. The purpose of the funds are to upgrade or build new facilities for those sports. PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST last season, St. John’s has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2012 BIG EAST baseball championship by the league’s 12 head coaches.
The Red Storm received eight of a possible 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The coaches also chose St. John’s outfielder Jeremy Baltz as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named Louisville righthanded pitcher Justin Amlung the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year. MLBTradeRumors.com reports that Houston Astros first round pick George Springer met with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League on Saturday. Springer was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft after an outstanding career at UConn where he led the Huskies to an appearance in the Super Regionals.
