2012 Big East Preseason Coaches Poll Released

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST last season, St. John’s has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2012 BIG EAST baseball championship by the league’s 12 head coaches.

The Red Storm received eight of a possible 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The coaches also chose St. John’s outfielder Jeremy Baltz as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named Louisville righthanded pitcher Justin Amlung the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year. 2012 NCBWA Preseason All-American Teams Announced

WICHITA, Kan. – One of the youngest groups in the decade-plus history of selections, the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America team has a strong element of 2011 NCAA World Series returnees and loads of exceptional 2012 season sophomores and juniors.

After back-to-back NCAA titles for South Carolina and numerous defections to the professional ranks in ‘11, the 2012 projected team may be a mini-view of the NCAA World Series next June. Continue reading

UConn’s Springer looking to play Independent Baseball?

MLBTradeRumors.com reports that Houston Astros first round pick George Springer met with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League on Saturday. Springer was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft after an outstanding career at UConn where he led the Huskies to an appearance in the Super Regionals. He hit .343 with 12 homers and driving in 77 runs on the year.  Continue reading

Breaking down the CCBL All-Star Game by Conference/Teams

Since the Cape Cod Baseball League announced their 2011 All-Star Game rosters on Friday, lets take a look at what conferences and college programs have had the most success this summer. The leading conference this year is the Pac-10 conference which features eight players from seven different school. Coming in second place is the SEC which has six players from four different schools. Interesting enough, the ACC and Big East conference both have four players in the game this year which speaks to how strong the the Big East over the last couple of seasons. Continue reading

UConn’s John Andreoli having success in Cape Cod League

Heading into the 2011 season, the real talk around the UConn program was the fact they had two absolute studs in George Springer and Matt Barnes. Both of these young men went in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft to the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox respectively. The rest of the Huskies squad was extremely talented including outfielder John Andreoli. He ended up finishing the year with a .317 average with 31 RBI as he started all 66 games for the Huskies. In the 2011 MLB Draft, the Cubs selected him in the 17th round.  Continue reading

South Carolina heads back to CWS with 8-2 win over UConn

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Christian Walker hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning, and South Carolina added five more insurance runs in the ninth as the Gamecocks advanced to the College World Series for the second straight year with an 8-2 victory over Connecticut on Sunday night at Carolina Stadium.
