SoCal Roundup: No. 1 Fullerton Upended

It only took until Day Two for the list of undefeated Southern California teams to trim to just one (not including UC Santa Barbara, who has yet to play).

But the team with a still unblemished record is not No. 1 Cal State Fullerton or fellow top 10 squad, UCLA. Instead it is the USC Trojans, who have needed 26 innings to determine a pair of games with Northwestern.

USC isn’t the only team playing extra baseball early on. Five of the SoCal games went into extra innings this afternoon.

Washington State 9, #1 Cal State Fullerton 7 (11 innings)

The Titans clawed back from a 7-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but in the ninth inning when Fullerton had an opportunity to collect a walk-off win after J.D. Davis tripled with one out, the Titans couldn’t get the job done. Continue reading

SoCal College Baseball Opening Weekend Preview

It’s Valentine’s Day!

Who cares? Unless your sweetie is taking you to the ballfield, we definitely don’t.

That’s because it’s Opening Day! The college baseball season officially kicks off today.

To get you ready for the opening weekend of Southern California baseball action, we’ve got where the teams will be playing along with an Around the Horn preview of series to watch.

And in this opening weekend preview, you’ll also get the preseason version of Shotgun’s SoCal Squad, your All-Southern California Team.

Teams wil be trying to start strong to open the season and there is an opportunity for teams to makes some noise. Long Beach State hosts Vanderbilt while No. 1 ranked Cal State Fullerton will welcome a Washington State squad that has a lot of potential.

2014 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll

Pac12LogoWALNUT CREEK, Calif. — In a polling of the Pac-12’s baseball coaches, defending Conference champion OREGON STATE has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference title again this season. The Cardinal received nine of 10 possible first-place votes and 98 points. Oregon State finished the 2013 campaign with a 52-12 record and advanced to the College World Series where they finished the year tied for third. The Beavers, led by preseason All-Americans Michael Conforto, Dylan Davis, Andrew Moore, Ben Wetzler and Scott Schultz, enter the season as a consensus top-5 team in the national rankings. 2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 19. David Berg (UCLA)

David Berg fires.College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 19 on our countdown is junior RHP David Berg from Covina, California where he was a two year letter winner at Bishop Amat High School. As a senior, he went 7-1 with four saves and a 1.05 ERA, logging 59 strikeouts and five walks in 47.0 innings while being used exclusively as a relief pitcher. Continue reading

2014 Top 100 Countdown: 21. James Kaprielian (UCLA)

KaprielianCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 21 on our countdown is UCLA sophomore RHP James Kaprielian (UCLA). He was a three-year varsity baseball letterwinner at Beckman High School (Irvine, Calif.) under head coach Kevin Lavelle where he posted a career record of 33-3 with a 0.96 ERA, 250 strikeouts and 23 complete games. In his senior campaign, he went 12-2 with a 0.84 ERA, striking out 112 batters in 83.1 innings pitched and recording 10 saves. He was selected in the 40th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. Continue reading

CBD Top 100 Countdown: 73. Cody Poteet (UCLA)

PoteetWe continue the countdown today with number 73, UCLA pitcher Cody Poteet. In his freshman campaign with the Bruins, Poteet was slotted as a midweek starter making 29 appearances, including 11 starts. While on the bump for the Bruins, the right-hander went 4-6, compiling 56 strikeouts and posting a 4.84 ERA. With a tough Bruin’s schedule, Poteet found himself in many big spots, yet the freshman did not let that change his approach. In 70.2 IP the 6’1” pitcher only gave up 57 hits and allowed only .227 opposing batting average which was good for 7th in the Pac-12. Continue reading

UCLA wins 2013 National Championship

UCLADogPileFeaturedOmaha, Neb. – As the bat came around and grounded the ball towards first base, David Berg ran over to cover the bag to mark the final out in an 8-0 win over Mississippi State.

The national title is UCLA baseball’s first College World Series title and 109th national title in school history. The Bruins improve to a final 49-17 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in the NCAA Tournament, while Mississippi State falls to 51-20 and a second place finish. Continue reading

CWS Championship: UCLA 3 Mississippi State 1

AdamPlutkoUCLAFeaturedOmaha, Neb. – A concrete Bruins’ defense held the Mississippi State Bulldogs to just one run in its 3-1 victory in game one of the College World Series finals on Monday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

UCLA improves to 48-17 on the season and will look to capture its first baseball NCAA title and 109th title in school history tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT. Mississippi State falls to 51-19 overall and will need a win Tuesday night to force the if necessary game on Wednesday night. Continue reading
