NCBWA Names 2012 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the eighth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Wednesday. 2012 Conference USA Preseason Coaches Poll Released

Conference USA announced its 2012 preseason baseball awards, as chosen by the league’s nine head coaches. UCF junior utility player D.J. Hicks was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Rice sophomore left-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. Rice was chosen to win the league’s championship. LITTLE ROCK – Junior Tyler Buckley pitched four scoreless innings to help the Maroon Team even UALR’s Fall World Series with a 2-1 victory over the Silver Team Wednesday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field. Sophomore Ryan Montgomery pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save as the two teams head into Saturday’s contest with the series tied at one game apiece. Continue reading

UCF Selects Skanska & DLR Group for Baseball Stadium Expansion

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF Athletics is excited to announce that a contractor/architect selection has been made for the baseball stadium expansion. Skanska USA Building, Inc. and DLR Group will serve as the design-build team that will perform all design and construction services for the project. Ryan Klosterman Joins UCF Baseball Coaching Staff

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF head coach Terry Rooney announced Friday that central Florida native Ryan Klosterman will join the UCF baseball coaching staff for the 2011-12 season. Klosterman will be in charge of the Knights’ infielders and team defense and will also assist with offense and recruiting.

“I am extremely excited to have Ryan Klosterman join our staff at UCF. His background is not only a huge asset for our program, but has prepared him to become an outstanding coach,” Rooney said. “He has experienced playing at the highest level of college baseball, along with the last eight years in professional baseball. Former Miami Assistant Joe Mercadante joins UCF Coaching Staff

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF head baseball coach Terry Rooney announced Friday that former Miami assistant coach Joe Mercadante will join his coaching staff as the Knights’ hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am pleased to announce Joe Mercadante as our new assistant coach,” Rooney said. “Joe has a proven track record for developing hitters and catchers at the highest level of college baseball, along with an outstanding reputation as a relentless recruiter. As we continue to move UCF into the upper echelon of college baseball, I am excited that we have hired an established coach that has been to Omaha, while propelling many of his former players to professional baseball.” Continue reading

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Alabama scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a season-high 12 runs to post a 12-5 victory over the Central Florida Knights in the elimination game of the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday afternoon. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – In a span of three-consecutive pitches in the seventh inning, No. 2 UCF scored five runs and eventually plated 13 runs in the final three innings to defeat No. 4 Bethune-Cookman, 16-5, in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Saturday.
