SoCal Weekend Preview: OK, Texas Trippin

Four SoCal squads take to the skies for major road trips this weekend with three teams traveling to one side or the other of the Red River. The Big 12′s Baylor and Oklahoma State get a pair of Southern California gems in No. 4 Cal State Fullerton and San Diego while a strong Sam Houston State squad will welcome Cal State Northridge.

Another quality squad from the Lone Star State will make its way to Los Angeles as Houston will make stops at USC, UCLA and Pepperdine as part of the Not-So-Dodgertown Classic (the name is explained below). The Big 12 will also send a team this way as West Virginia makes its second cross-country trip to Southern Cali to participate in the UCR Tournament with the Highlanders and Sacramento State.

But the biggest pepper test (baseball’s version of the litmus) will be UC Santa Barbara’s road trip to Tucson for Arizona’s Hi Corbett Tournament that will feature the home-standing Wildcats and No. 12 Mississippi State.

To get you ready for the Southern California baseball action, we’ve got your schedule and Around the Horn preview of series to watch. Continue reading

SoCal Roundup: Close to Home

Staying close to home was a common theme for the SoCal midweek matchups for all but one team, which had one heck of a road trip just to get to their Tuesday matchup.

San Diego and San Diego State renewed their rivalry while USC faced off with former Trojan head coach Mike Gillespie.  And LMU didn’t even have to travel east of Interstate 405 as the Lions faced off with yet another Pac-12 club.

SoCal Roundup: Let’s Play Two!

There were five doubleheaders as teams tried to salvage as much playing time as possible after Mother Nature had wiped out several games on Friday and Saturday.

The much-anticipated series between No. 17 Cal Poly and USC finally got underway (and then quickly faced another rain delay). The squads got a pair of nine-inning games in and the results couldn’t have been more different.

One part of UCLA’s team tried to outdo itself for the third day in a row as the Bruins looked to stay unbeaten in the Irish Classic in Cary, NC.

Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside and San Diego State all looked for sweeps, even though that meant swiping both games of a doubleheader for the latter three squads. And Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge both tried to right the ship against Pac-12 opponents.

SoCal Roundup: Saturday Aces

The rains again claimed most of the action in Southern California, but the teams on the road were able to get their games in (except for Long Beach State who fell victim to a ‘sub-freezing temperatures’ cancellation at Wichita State) and there were some really great matchups.

After missing him twice in Omaha last summer, UCLA finally had to face off with North Carolina State ace Carlos Rodon, but it was a different lefty that stole the show.

A pair of young top prospects took the mound in Eugene as Cal State Fullerton and Oregon battled to a one-run contest that wasn’t decided until the eighth inning.

SoCal Roundup: Rain, Rain Go Away

“Rain! Rain! Go away! Don’t ever come back until baseball season is over.” (or something like that)

Instead of an exciting matchup between USC and Cal Poly or some tripleheader USD Tournament action, all there was to do in Los Angeles tonight was listen and watch games online since everything in Southern California was cancelled on Friday.

There still were some great games played by some SoCal squads. Could James Kaprielian overcome UCLA’s struggling offense? How would Thomas Eshelman respond after struggling his last outing?

SoCal Roundup: Trojans Take First Loss

There were only four games on Tuesday, but they each featured a pair of Southern California ball clubs. All four turned out to be tight affairs with three decided by one run — including a game that featured a seven-run comeback and another that featured an extra-innings walk-off.

We’ve got your quick roundup of all four games with photo galleries from the dramatic San Diego State/UC Riverside game and the UC Santa Barbara upset of UCLA: Continue reading

SoCal Roundup: 1,000 For Gillespie

Mike Gillespie has seen just about everything this game has to offer after 20 years at USC and currently in his seventh season as the head man at UC Irvine. On Sunday, he saw something very familiar that got him to a new plateau. “Skip” reached a milestone, picking up his 1,000th career Division I victory.

While Gillespie saw his ‘Eaters win, they didn’t quite do it in the dramatic fashion that USC and Pepperdine pulled off to get sweeps against inferior foes. Big rubber matches between UCLA/Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton/San Francisco turned into dominant one-sided performances.

SoCal Roundup: Shutout City

There was some impressive pitching in Southern California Saturday. Four shutouts were thrown with Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly getting in on the action as they both evened big series.

San Diego and Cal State Northridge both swept doubleheaders while UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount dropped heartbreakers. UC Irvine got a big win over a ranked squad.

SoCal Roundup: Extra! Extra!

“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!”

You can just hear the sound of the paperboy of yonder past hocking the latest edition.

On Friday night, Cal State Fullerton and San Francisco needed a special edition. The Titans and Dons set a new Goodwin Field record for the longest game played.

USC continued its walk-off magic, UCLA got the first win in a big regional rematch with Cal Poly and Long Beach State broke out the whooping stick.

SoCal Roundup: USC Upsets No. 2 Fullerton

Today was our first opportunity to see the Southern California teams face off with each other in mid-week action — something that makes the SoCal teams unique.

Rather than playing schools from directional schools or baby small conferences like might happen in other parts of the country, the SoCal coaches match up with each other, creating a great atmosphere and competition.

Unlike last season when Cal State Fullerton started the season 10-0, the Titans look vulnerable after a second sloppy game in four days cost Fullerton at USC.
