CBD Photo Gallery: Riverside Rallies From Eight-Run Deficit

Tagged out.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Kris Bryant’s nation-leading 29th home run and an 11-3, sixth-inning lead were not enough for San Diego on Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex. UC Riverside rallied from an eight-run deficit to take a 12-11 victory in ten innings. And with the win, the Highlanders may have played spoiler for San Diego’s chances to receive an at large selection in the NCAA Tournament.

Devyn Bolasky scored in six consecutive plate appearances, including tallying the game-tying run in the ninth inning and the game-winner in the 10th inning. Read the rest of this entry »

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Conference Battles

Taylor Sparks led Irvine to a big series win.

Taylor Sparks led Irvine to a big series win.

There were some matchups with big postseason potential implications this weekend as 10 of the 11 SoCal squads took to the diamond. The Big West featured some crucial matchups with four teams chasing after Cal State Fullerton.

This week’s action featured seven pitchers throwing complete games, yet the Pitcher of the Week did not. San Diego’s Kris Bryant hit five round trippers last week. He hit his nation’s best 26th, 27th and 28th homers over the weekend, but he didn’t earn the Hitter of the Week honor this week. Instead, he was bested by a teammate.

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Finish Strong

UC Irvine walked-off twice.

UC Irvine had two walk-off wins.

With conference positioning and potential at-large berths on the line, 10 of the 11 SoCal squads took to the diamond this weekend. (Pepperdine had the week off due to finals and graduation.) There were two big series with teams battling in their respective conference standings, but also playing their way toward the NCAA Tournament bubble.

This week’s action featured a midweek no-hitter and a batter driving in three runs in three consecutive games. San Diego’s Kris Bryant also went deep for his nation’s best 21st and 22nd homers, but he didn’t earn the Hitter of the Week honor this week. Instead, it comes from the Toreros’ crosstown rival.

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Road Warriors

San Diego State's effort came up just short.

San Diego State’s effort came up short at UNLV.

The SoCal show took to the road with all but one of the 11 Southern California squads playing on the road this weekend. There were some great matchups as three premier conference battles featured top 25 squads and another four series came down to a decisive Sunday showdown.

But for two SoCal squads, the door to the postseason may have slammed shut behind them as they were ushered out by the mighty sweep broom.

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Devastating Dirtbag Losses

Rough weekend for Long Beach.

It was a rough weekend for Long Beach State, who had two very disappointing endings. Outside of the Dirtbags’ struggles against rival Cal State Fullerton, it was a very successful weekend in Southern California as SoCal squads won five of the seven other series that were played.

Ranny Lowe scores the winning run.

After a rough weekend overall last week, the Southern California squads bounced back with four series sweeps and a pair of series wins. Southern California Week 4 Power Rankings

There were some major moves since the last power rankings, but not necessarily at the top. Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine both lost back-to-back games for the first time, but did they slide? And with four teams apparently fighting it out to show who can be worse in the recent week or so, who ultimately slides all the way to the bottom?

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Not Many Wins to Go Around

Kevin Kramer had the big hit against USC.

It was tough sledding for the Southern California programs this weekend as only the cream of the crop came away with a winning record.

USC and UCLA hosted the Dodgertown Classic, bringing in a pair of ranked squads for competition. San Diego also hosted a tournament at its new Fowler Park, inviting three Northern squads to come down and enjoy the sunshine and quality baseball.

Cal State Fullerton hosted an SEC squad while UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount went on the road to face squads that could vie for the Mountain West and Big 12 championships.

Southern California Week 2 Power Rankings

After a tremendous introduction to the stage, San Diego State froze like a scared little girl at the Apollo once the spotlight turned on it. A five-game losing streak sent the Aztecs on a nosedive in the rankings. So who takes the top spot this week after three top SoCal teams took road series in the Lonestar State this past weekend?

SoCal Weekend Wrap: Taking Down the State of Texas

Justin Garza was stellar again.

The second weekend of the season provided a lot of excitement for Southern California baseball fans. Three teams went on the road to play marquee series in Texas while San Diego State hosted No. 6 Oregon State and crosstown rival San Diego welcomed Kent State — a team that made it to the College World Series last year.

UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount both played Pac-12 programs with the Lions going on the road to take on No. 14 Oregon…and yet, it was UC Riverside playing at Sacramento State that produced the most talked about event of the entire weekend.
