Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 22nd-24th)

Four teams entered this weekend tied for first in Conference USA, but only the Golden Eagles of #24 Southern Miss (30-9, 9-3) remain atop the standings thanks to a three game sweep of Marshall (15-23, 2-10) in Hattiesburg. The biggest shock from this weekend’s conference play came from the Deep South, where UAB (23-17, 8-7) surprised #19 Rice (28-16, 9-6)—and the rest of CUSA—by taking both games of Saturday’s double-header to knock the Owls out of first. UCF (26-15, 6-9) won their first series since the opening week of conference play, by taking two from the CUSA’s best hitting team, Memphis (24-17, 7-5), on the road. Elsewhere in conference play, the NCAA’s best pitching team, East Carolina (27-13, 8-7) took two of three while visiting Houston (20-21, 7-5), and Tulane (23-17, 4-8) dropped two of three from visiting Mountain West foe Utah in their non-conference bye week. Conference USA Weekend Preview (April 22nd-24th)

Things still remain knotted amongst four teams at the top of the CUSA standings. Heading into the mid-point of conference play, Memphis, Southern Miss, Rice and Houston all share first place with winning percentages of .667. Nationally, Rice cracks the top 20 for the second time this season, moving back into the #19 spot it held the week of March 7th while USM drops one spot to #24 after sweeping New Orleans. (Of note, both the ECU-Houston and Utah-Tulane series start Thursday to accommodate Easter Sunday.) Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 15th-17th)

Another weekend of Conference USA play is in the books and with it a more definitive (or perhaps clouded as ever, depending on your point of view) picture of the conference standings. A menagerie of four teams remain tied atop of the conference standings as Memphis, Southern Miss and Houston each have 6-3 records and Rice is at 8-4. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Preview (April 15th-17th)

This weekend marks the fourth series in Conference USA play as teams look to improve their positions before entering the mid-way point of the conference season. Thus far, UAB, Southern Miss and Rice all hold 6-3 records, and with it first place in the standings. Houston holds the same .667 winning percentage, but at 4-2. Nationally, Rice remains at #22 after a 2-2 week which included a 2-0 shutout of #7 Texas A&M, while Southern Miss falls to #29 after almost being swept by Memphis over the weekend. Of note, Tigers shortstop Chad Zurcher leads the nation in hitting at .519, thirty-four points higher that C.J. Cron of Utah.  Continue reading

Conference USA Recap (April 8th-10th)

Upsets were abound in the third weekend of Conference USA play. First place Houston (17-17, 4-2) ran into some tough pitching from the UAB Blazers (18-13, 6-3) before being able to salvage the series finale in come-from-behind fashion after surrendering an early 6-0 lead. Ditto for second-place #23 Southern Miss (23-8, 6-3)who got knocked around by T.J. Rich and the Memphis (19-12, 3-3) offense, before likewise coming back in dramatic fashion thanks to a grand slam by first baseman Adam Doleac. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Preview (April 8th-10th)

Conference USA enters its third weekend of conference play with Houston atop the standings after a sweep of Tulane last weekend. Southern Miss sits in second place after a close loss to Mississippi State during the week, while Rice and UAB sit tied for third with conference records of 4-2. Nationally, Rice has jumped two places to #22 while USM is one spot behind at #23 after its weekend sweep of UCF. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

Conference USA’s second weekend of conference play was marked by impressive performances by the top three teams, with each sweeping their series. Houston (15-14, 3-0) sits atop the standings after a series sweep of Tulane (18-10, 1-5), #28 Southern Miss (22-5, 5-1) is in second after taking all three at UCF (19-9,2-4), and #25 Rice finished the trifecta by blanking Marshall (10-16, 1-5). Elsewhere in conference play UAB (16-11, 4-2) took two from ECU (20-7, 3-3) while Memphis (16-11, 1-2) completed a non-conference sweep of visiting Alcorn St. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Recap (March 25th-27th)

This past weekend marked the opening of conference play for CUSA, with Houston the odd-man out taking on in-state rival #11 TCU. Down in Hattiesburg, MS, #30 Southern Miss kicked off conference-play by exploding for 43 runs against visiting Tulane. The Golden Eagles notched 45 hits, reached double-digit scores in all three games, and capped off the series by run-ruling the Greenwave 12-0 in 7 innings. The ‘Wave pitching staff didn’t help their own cause, giving up 19 free passes and having no pitcher go longer than 4 innings (which was their closer RHP Nick Pepitone in Game 2), while the defense managed three errors in each game. Southern Miss LF Tyler Koelling, led the onslaught by hitting .500 (6-12) belting 2 homeruns and driving in 11 runs. Not to be outdone, Golden Eagles 1b Adam Doleac notched 9 hits on the weekend, elevating his average on the season to .378. Continue reading

ACC Weekend Preview (Feb. 18th-20th)

We start up the 2011 season today with all 12 ACC teams in action with most of the top teams facing weaker competition. The best two non-conference matchups this weekend is the Virginia Cavaliers taking part in the Auburn Tigers tourney while North Carolina heads to Southern California to take part in the USC Tournament while slipping in a game with Cal-State Fullerton on Saturday.
