Conference USA announced its 2013 preseason baseball awards, as chosen by the league’s nine head coaches. Rice senior infielder Christian Stringer was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Owls junior right-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. UAB releases 2013 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —- The UAB baseball team recently announced its 2013 schedule as the Blazers are coming off a historic season when they reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991.

Carolina took a commanding four-run lead after the first inning in game one and never looked back en route to a 10-2 season-opening victory over Xavier.

Conference USA announced its 2012 preseason baseball awards, as chosen by the league’s nine head coaches. UCF junior utility player D.J. Hicks was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Rice sophomore left-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. Rice was chosen to win the league’s championship. 2011 CUSA Player of the Year – Chad Zurcher, Memphis
In a year when offensive numbers across the country plummeted—and the name “BBCOR” became commonly uttered next to any manner of expletive—Memphis’ Chad Zurcher didn’t seem to get the memo. The junior from Knoxville finished the season with an NCAA-best .443 batting average, and his .455 average to finish the regular season was eight points higher than the CUSA single-season record set by UCF’s Chris Duffy in 2010. Zurcher was a large reason that Memphis finished the season with the best team batting average in the conference, as he led the league in multi-hit games (28). As well, Zurcher displayed an uncanny knack for getting on base as his 33 walks to just 17 strikeouts added up to a league-best (and nation-best) .547 on-base-percentage. For 117 pitches, UAB hurler Dillon Napoleon was nearly flawless. On his 118th offering to the plate, however, UCF first baseman Jonathan Griffin sent the recently appointed Conference USA Newcomer of the Year to the bench and turned a 4-3 deficit into a two-run lead as the Knights defeated the Blazers 6-4 in day two of the 2011 C-USA Baseball Championship sponsored by Trustmark Thursday morning at Trustmark Park. 2011 Conference USA Tournament Preview

#17 Rice and #20 Southern Miss have finished the 2011 regular season as CUSA co-champions—the first time in Conference USA’s 16 year history that two teams will share the regular season title. With their series victory of the Golden Eagles this past weekend, the Rice Owls lengthened their streak of consecutive titles to 16 years, and earned the No.1 seed in this week’s CUSA Championship Tournament to be played in Pearl, MS. While the odds of Rice and Southern Miss (the No. 2 seed) receiving at-large bids to the NCAA tournament are high, for the other six teams in the field, a tournament championship is the only guarantee they’ll have for extending their season. Conference USA Weekend Recap (May 19th-21st)

The Rice Owls and Southern Miss Golden Eagles are Conference USA Regular Season co-Champions for 2011. #17 Rice stormed into Hattiesburg, MS this weekend and took two of three from #20 Southern Miss to take a share of the league title in advance of the upcoming CUSA Championship Tournament to start Tuesday in Pearl, MS. It was the first time in Conference USA’s 16-year history that regular season co-champions have been crowned, and while it was the second consecutive regular season title for the Owls, it was the first for the Golden Eagles since 2003. Elsewhere in conference play, #30 ECU swept Tulane to secure the #3 spot in the CUSA tournament, Memphis took two of three from visiting Houston and UCF took two of three from Marshall. UAB split two games on the road against Utah to finish their regular season schedule. The Conference Tournament starts Wednesday morning at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS.
