2013 Conference USA Preseason Coaches Poll and Teams

Conference USA announced its 2013 preseason baseball awards, as chosen by the league’s nine head coaches. Rice senior infielder Christian Stringer was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Owls junior right-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. Rice was chosen to win the league’s championship. The Owls have won either the regular season or tournament championship in each of its seven years as a member of C-USA. Read the rest of this entry »
Tulane names Shooter Hunt as Assistant Coach

NEW ORLEANS – When head coach Rick Jones needs to fill a spot on his coaching staff he has to look no further than the stable of accomplished players that he has tutored at Tulane. After James Jurries took a fulltime post over the summer, the Green Wave skipper will bring aboard former pitching standout Shooter Hunt as the programs volunteer assistant for the 2013 season. Tulane releases 2012 Schedule

Tulane’s Jake Gautreau Moves to Recruiting Coordinator

NEW ORLEANS – On Friday, September 2, Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones announced that current assistant coach Jake Gautreau has assumed the role of recruiting coordinator for the program, which became effective June 15, 2011. Gautreau spent the last two seasons on the coaching staff and aided with recruiting, but his third season as a coach will include the full recruiting slate. Read the rest of this entry »
Former Tulane Player/Coach Bernard Abadie Passes Away

NEW ORLEANS – Former Tulane baseball standout, head coach and Hall of Famer Bernard “Ben” Abadie died at his home on Friday, Aug. 19. He was 89-years old.
Friends and family are invited to attend Abadie’s memorial funeral mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Metairie, La., on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin at the church at 10 a.m. and interment will take place at Metairie Cemetery. 2011 CUSA Player of the Year – Chad Zurcher, Memphis
In a year when offensive numbers across the country plummeted—and the name “BBCOR” became commonly uttered next to any manner of expletive—Memphis’ Chad Zurcher didn’t seem to get the memo. The junior from Knoxville finished the season with an NCAA-best .443 batting average, and his .455 average to finish the regular season was eight points higher than the CUSA single-season record set by UCF’s Chris Duffy in 2010. Zurcher was a large reason that Memphis finished the season with the best team batting average in the conference, as he led the league in multi-hit games (28). As well, Zurcher displayed an uncanny knack for getting on base as his 33 walks to just 17 strikeouts added up to a league-best (and nation-best) .547 on-base-percentage. For 117 pitches, UAB hurler Dillon Napoleon was nearly flawless. On his 118th offering to the plate, however, UCF first baseman Jonathan Griffin sent the recently appointed Conference USA Newcomer of the Year to the bench and turned a 4-3 deficit into a two-run lead as the Knights defeated the Blazers 6-4 in day two of the 2011 C-USA Baseball Championship sponsored by Trustmark Thursday morning at Trustmark Park.
