The Citadel releases 2013 Schedule

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel head coach Fred Jordan has announced the 2013 baseball schedule, a slate that includes 31 home games and 15 contests against schools that qualified for the 2012 NCAA tournament.

The schedule includes the traditional home-and-home series against South Carolina (March 19 in Charleston and April 9 in Columbia) and road contests against perennial ACC powers Georgia Tech (March 26) and North Carolina (May 1). Read the rest of this entry »

Southern Conference Tournament Day 3 Recap

Georgia Southern and Samford, both 2-0, took the day off as the remaining one-loss teams battled for the right to move on in tournament play.  The way the tournament is set up, both of the 2-0 teams will have to be defeated twice on Saturday, with the winners of each separate bracket facing off in Sunday’s championship game.

2012 CBD Season Preview: Southern Conference

2011 Season Review:

  • Tournament Champion: Georgia Southern
  • Regular Season Champion: Elon
  • Conference RPI: #15
  • Conference ISR: #16

In 2010 the Southern Conference had a conference record 3 teams (Citadel, CofC and Elon) get in a regional. However, in 2011 only the tournament champion Georgia Southern (36-26 overall and 18-12 SOCON) received a NCAA bid. Regular season champion Elon (36-21 overall and 23-7 SOCON) along with CofC (39-22 overall and 18-12 SOCON), and Samford (37-23 overall and 18-12 SOCON) came up just short of a regional. UNCG who won just 7 conference games in 2010 finished just one game behind Elon in regular season at 22-8 in conference and 34-20 overall. +14 games overall and an amazing +15 in conference. The Bulldogs play host to a four-team tournament to open the season and remain in Charleston for the first four weeks of the season, while hosting 33 total games at Riley Park. The Citadel legendary coach Chal Port passes away

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Head Baseball Coach and Citadel Hall of Fame Honorary Inductee Chal Port passed away early Saturday morning after a prolonged illness.

Port compiled an overall record of 641-386-2 (.624) in 27 seasons (1965-91) and remains the winningest coach in the school’s history in any sport. An honorary inductee in The Citadel Hall of Fame in 1996, Port led The Citadel to five postseason NCAA Regional Tournaments while posting a winning record in 24 of his 27 seasons. His 1990 team advanced to the College World Series in Omaha with a school-record 46 victories. That squad was the first and still only military school ever to reach the College World Series. Clemson, SC – Will Lamb had five of the Tigers’ season-high 23 hits in #15 Clemson’s 19-0 victory over Davidson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. In their last regular-season home game, the Tigers improved to 37-16 on the season. The Wildcats ended their season with an 18-30 record.

The Tigers put on an offensive show, as Clemson tied its season high for runs and tied a school record with a .523 batting average (23-for-44) in the game. It tied Clemson’s performance against Georgia Southern on March 12, 2002, when the Tigers were also 23-for-44 that day. 2011 Southern Conference Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and media have each selected College of Charleston as the preseason favorite to win the league championship in 2011.

The Cougars received all 10 possible first-place votes and 100 points in the coaches’ balloting, as coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. CofC also grabbed 19 of 22 first-place votes and 239 points in the media poll. Coach Monte Lee’s team returns six of nine starters in the field as well as a pair of weekend starting pitchers from the 2010 team that was 44-19 overall and finished second in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional. Michael Clevinger off The Citadel’s Baseball Team

The Citadel’s sophomore RHP Michael Clevinger has been removed from the team’s roster after being listed early this weekend. According to sources, Clevinger has left the school. The sophomore righty was expected to be a key part of the Bulldogs pitching rotation as he made 16 appearances (15 starts) while going 5-3 with an ERA of 5.15 in 92.2 innings pitched. He was even better in Southern Conference play as he went a perfect 4-0 with an ERA of 5.08 in 10 Southern Conference games. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 CBD Season Preview: Southern Conference

The 2010 season was a historic season for the Southern Conference.   After getting 2 teams in Regionals in 5 of 6 previous years, along with the SOCON tourney champion and regular season champion(The Citadel) 2 teams, College of Charleston and Elon earned an at-large bid putting 3 SOCON teams in NCAA postseason for the first time in history of the league. In 2010 the SOCON finished the season with 7 teams with RPI in the top 75. The Citadel releases 2011 Schedule; David Beckley Promoted

TheCitadel2011ScheduleCharleston, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team released their schedule for the 2011 season on Monday. The Bulldogs will host 35 games at Riley Park this season, including 20 of their first 21 contests of the season.

“We have another demanding non-conference schedule this upcoming season, a bulk of which we will play at home early,” said Head Coach Fred Jordan. “The Southern Conference schedule gets tougher each year and will start earlier this season for us.”

Columbia (SC) Regional

Virginia Tech 4 The Citadel 3

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Virginia Tech held off The Citadel 4-3 in an elimination game of the NCAA Columbia Regional on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Stadium, and will now face undefeated host South Carolina at 7 p.m.

Should the Hokies (40-21) defeat the eighth-ranked Gamecocks tonight, the two will meet again on Monday at 7 p.m., to determine who advances to the Super Regional. No matter what happens, the Hokies, 2-1 in the regional, have now won two games in the same NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1954.
