Big 12 Weekend Preview

The Big 12 opens the week with a promising schedule. Texas Tech hosts a tournament, while Nebraska and Missouri are both participating in tournaments away from home. No. 6 Texas plays host to Maryland, with No. 5 Oklahoma playing host to William and Mary. Most of the other match-ups favor the Big 12 teams, including no. 32 Baylor/Oral Roberts, no. 16 Texas A&M/LeMoyne, Oklahoma State/Bryant and Kansas State/Pacific. Unfortunately, Kansas travels to Fort Worth to take on no. 3 TCU, which won’t be good for the early season record.

2011 CBD Season Preview: Southland Conference

2010 saw three Southland teams with a chance to make the postseason, but tournament champion Lamar was the only team in, as Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana were left to think about next year. This year, the league belongs to the Bobcats and Lions, as both teams return a wealth of talent. Texas State is led by All-American candidate P Carson Smith, the league’s top prospect. 2011 Southland Conference Preseason Poll Released

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State is favored to win its third consecutive Southland Conference regular-season baseball championship by a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced Tuesday.

The Bobcats received nine first-place votes and 118 points in the coaches’ poll and eight first-place votes and 112 points in the SID poll. Texas State returns 20 letterwinners, six starters and 12 pitchers, including junior Carson Smith, the Southland’s pitcher and newcomer of the year recipient, from a Bobcat squad that won its second consecutive regular-season title. Texas State went 23-10 in conference play last spring, recording its fourth 20-win season in conference play in the last five years. Top 100 Countdown: 40. Carson Smith (Texas State)

CarsonSmithActionCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 40 with Texas State’s Carson Smith. He is a 6-5 215 pound right handed pitcher from Midland Texas where he attended Midland Christian High School. As a senior in 2008, he was named District MVP and 1st team All-State. He was also named TAPPS 5A 2nd Team All-District in 2007 as a junior.

Texas State Releases 2011 Schedule

player_2307227San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State baseball team released its 2011 schedule on Monday that features 55 games, 31 of which will be played in San Marcos at the Bobcat Baseball Stadium. The Bobcats will be on the road for 24 games, including trips to the University of Texas, TCU, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

Team USA Collegiate National Team Trials: Game 5 Recap

BradMillerClemson Cary, N.C. — Brad Miller (Clemson), Austin Nola (LSU) and Anthony Rendon (Rice) each collected two hits to help the Blue team to a 5-3 win over the Red squad Saturday afternoon in Game 5 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Center (NTC).

With the game knotted up at three in the bottom of the seventh, Nola laced a single through the left side with one out scoring Steve Rodriguez (UCLA) putting Blue (2-1-2) up 4-3. Rodriguez, who was 0-for-2 with two runs, drew his second walk of the afternoon to start the frame then moved into scoring position after swiping second base setting up Nola’s game-winning hit. Miller followed with a single through the left side and Rendon reached on an error that scored Nola for the games final run and giving Blue a 5-3 victory.

Texas State Repeats as Top Seed for Southland Baseball Tournament

Bobcats win fourth regular season title and will be trying to become second team to win four tournament titles.

FRISCO, Texas – After defending its title from a season ago, Texas State will again be the top seed in the 2010 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament when it begins Wednesday at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Bobcats claimed their fourth regular-season championship and second outright title on the final day of the regular season with a 34-20 overall record and a 23-10 mark in conference play.
