Mike Gillespie has seen just about everything this game has to offer after 20 years at USC and currently in his seventh season as the head man at UC Irvine. On Sunday, he saw something very familiar that got him to a new plateau. “Skip” reached a milestone, picking up his 1,000th career Division I victory.
While Gillespie saw his ‘Eaters win, they didn’t quite do it in the dramatic fashion that USC and Pepperdine pulled off to get sweeps against inferior foes. Big rubber matches between UCLA/Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton/San Francisco turned into dominant one-sided performances.

There was some impressive pitching in Southern California Saturday. Four shutouts were thrown with Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly getting in on the action as they both evened big series.
San Diego and Cal State Northridge both swept doubleheaders while UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount dropped heartbreakers. UC Irvine got a big win over a ranked squad.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Baseball released its 2014 schedule Monday afternoon, and it’s the competitive, exciting schedule that Texas State fans have come to expect from Head Coach Ty Harrington and his team. The schedule includes highlight games against Rice, Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, Baylor, Washington State, UC Riverside and Valparaiso in addition to conference action in the Sun Belt Conference, the sixth rated baseball conference in all of collegiate baseball in 2013. Last weekend I attended the Texas vs. Texas State fall scrimmage. Texas had played the previous day against Lamar and lost a rain-shortened scrimmage. Texas State, a new member of the Sun Belt conference, travelled 30 miles north to Austin to take on the Longhorns.
Fall games are a little different than the regular season in that the coaches are really trying to see all of the guys play in a game situation, so I saw a Texas lineup that featured 3 designated hitters and a Texas State pitching rotation that featured 12 pitchers in 12 innings. Continue reading

DENVER - Dallas Baptist has been selected as the favorite to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s 10 head coaches.
The Patriots received 80 points and eight first place votes after a 41-19 season last year as an independent. DBU advanced to its second-straight NCAA Tournament last season. DBU joins the WAC this season after playing as a Division I independent the past nine seasons. As an independent, the Patriots have made three trips to the NCAA tournament, including an NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2011. Continue reading

San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State Athletic Department and head coach Ty Harrington released the 2013 baseball schedule on Thursday, revealing a 55-game slate that features 30 games at Bobcat Ballpark and 25 away games. The Bobcats’ season will open with their annual home tournament, the Bobcat Invitational, on February 15-17. The three-day tournament will feature three games against Missouri State, Tulane and Sam Houston. Continue reading
