A near-perfect week at the plate by third baseman Jeremy Macklin of Texas Lutheran University and outstanding performances against nationally-ranked teams by two pitchers with contrasting styles, Matt Schuld of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) and D.J. Keckler of Wesley College, have earned them the first NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors for 2009, covering the week of February 23-March 1. Louisiana College senior outfielder David Roux ( Denham Springs, LA / DSHS) went 11-for-21 with five home runs and 11 RBIs over five games. Roux added three doubles and scored 10 times. Texas-Tyler senior outfielder Jared Hood ( Marshall, TX / MHS) went 6-for-13 with three home runs, one double and five RBIs over a 4-0 stretch that included a sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Hood, who hit two long balls in one game against UMHB, scored six runs and walked twice.
RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University and the University of Texas at Tyler have been predicted to win 2009 American Southwest Conference baseball division titles, it was announced by the ASC office on Tuesday (Jan. 27) after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Joseph Villegas, Concordia University Texas’ Tom Williams, Hardin-Simmons University’s Kyle Barton, the University of the Ozarks’ Cory Briggs and Bruce Cameron, and UT Tyler’s Blake Booher all earned preseason individual honors.
