Sunday Roundup (3/9)

Wrapping up the weekend action Baylor fought back to get a massive 5-4 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. After working around an error that led to two runs in the opening frame, starter Austin Stone settled in to throw six strong innings and lead the Bears to the win. Josh Michalec came on and shut the door in the 9th to earn his 6th save of the season to preserve the Bears victory. Previously dropping Friday’s game 11-0, Baylor showed impressive resolve earning back-to-back one-run wins over one of the top teams in the country. The win comes at a pivotal time for the Bears, who have played a difficult schedule thus far and begin Big 12 play next weekend against Texas Tech. Continue reading

Sunday Roundup for March 2nd

On a weekend full of top 25 showdowns, Cal State Fullerton made sure they stood out. Going to Eugene, OR to face an 8-0 Ducks team was a tall task but the Titans not only won the series but swept Oregon in their own ballpark, an incredible feat to say the least. Fullerton struggled a bit in the first two weeks of the season coming into the series at 4-3 overall, but showed why the club had such high expectations and a pre-season #1 ranking. Pitching dominated for the Titans throughout the series as they took games 9-2, 3-2, and 5-4 today to finish off the sweep. Continue reading

Sunday Roundup (2/23)

Sunday’s action saw Cal Poly get a pivotal series-clinching win in the rubber game over UCLA 9-1. The victory was huge for the Mustangs, who dropped the first game on Friday only to show a lot of character and bounce back with two straight wins on the road to take the series. Offensively Nick Torres and Brian Mundell continued to be the story as the duo combined for five hits and five RBI on the day. Mundell homered in all three games of the series and raised his average to a red-hot .455 on the season. Continue reading

Saturday Roundup (2/22)

Saturday’s roundup takes us to the PAC 12/Big 10 Challenge in Surprise, AZ where Michigan State pulled off a comeback win late against #1 Oregon State. Down 7-6 entering the top of the 9th, the Spartans pushed across two runs to take the 8-7 lead and held on for the win. Michigan State has been very impressive thus far in 2014, taking the first two games against the PAC 12 this weekend to improve to 4-1 overall and a chance to go 3-0 in the challenge if they can beat Washington on Sunday. Next weekend they will have another opportunity to pick up some quality wins as they face Mississippi State twice in the Diamond Classic in Starkville. Continue reading

2014 SEC Preseason Coaches Poll

SEC Circle Gold Letters on White BackgroundThe South Carolina Gamecocks are predicted to win the 2014 Southeastern Conference baseball championship by a slim one-vote margin, as voted by the league’s 14 baseball coaches in the 23rd annual preseason SEC poll.

The Gamecocks, ranked No. 14 nationally in the preseason USA Today Coaches’ Poll, seek to capture their fourth SEC Championship. LSU and Mississippi State, ranked second and fourth in the USA Today poll respectively, received four votes each in the overall vote. Continue reading

2013 record: 29-30 (14-16)
Finish: Regionals (4th place, Bloomington)

2013 was a season of frustration and disappointment for a team coming off back to back to back College World Series appearances. Injuries decimated the Gators, and many even questioned whether they belonged in a regional after finishing one game over .500 heading into postseason play. 2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 42. AJ Simcox (Tennessee)

AJSimcoxWe continue the countdown today with number 42 with Tennessee sophomore shortstop AJ Simcox. The Knoxville, Tennessee native attended Farragut High School where he was a three time state champion from 2009-2011. As a high school senior, he hit .470 with two homers and 32 RBI while being named Knoxville News Sentinel PrepXtra Player of the Year among other awards. The Colorado Rockies selected him in the 32nd round but decided to go to his hometown school in Tennessee to play for head coach Dave Serrano. Continue reading

2014 Top 100 Countdown: 61. Christin Stewart (Tennessee)

ChristinStewartWe continue the countdown today with number 61, Tennessee outfielder Christin Stewart. In his freshman campaign with the Vols, Stewart did not waste any time as he went 2-4 with three RBI and a homerun in his college debut against UNLV. The 6’0” outfielder played in 46 games in the 2013 season getting 43 starts in the outfield. In 145 AB, Stewart was able to post a .310 average while compiling 45 hits, 27 RBI and .414 OBP. Stewart signed with the Volunteers to add a spark to their lineup offensively and he didn’t disappoint. The rookie showed great poise on the diamond and quickly became an everyday outfielder at UT.
