Top 5 Coaches for Notre Dame Baseball

NDLogo Notre Dame recently announced on June 14th that they released Dave Schrage from his contract clearing the way for a new head coach for Notre Dame baseball. The Notre Dame job in the past has seen many great coaches come through South Bend including former Arizona State head coach Pat Murphy and current LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. They have also had some great players over the years from Wilie McGill from the late 1800’s to John Axford who made his major league debut on September 15th 2009. Over the last week or so, there has been some rumors across the nation on who will be the best coach for the Irish. Here are my top five if I was in charge of the search committee.

Tampa splits doubleheader on Sunday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The top-ranked University of Tampa baseball team split Sunday afternoon’s games, defeating No. 12 West Alabama 7-2 and dropping their second matchup against No. 19 Southern Arkansas by a score of 8-3. The split moves the Spartans to 6-3 on the season, while the Tigers also fall to 6-3 and the Muleriders to 7-3.

After falling behind in an early 2-0 hole, Tampa starter John Wiedenbauer rebounded with four scoreless innings, walking one batter and striking out eight. The Spartans slowly chipped away at the early deficit, first with Devin Gonzalez’s RBI double to drive in shortstop Jesus Barroso, who went 3-5 in the game and then with some small ball tied the game at 2-all. Tampa swept by West Alabama and Southern Arkansas

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After Friday’s matchup against West Alabama was put off due to rain, the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans collected their first two losses on the season when they dropped the series opener to No. 19 Southern Arkansas (6-3) by a score of 16-3 and fell to No. 12 West Alabama (6-1) 9-3. Tampa powers past Rollins 9-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. – After being named to the top spot in the national poll earlier this afternoon, the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans took down Sunshine State Conference opponent Rollins College by a score of 9-2 on Tuesday night in Winter Park. Tampa Uses Timely Hitting To Sweep Double Header

Tampa, Fla.- The second ranked University of Tampa (3-0) baseball team takes both games in the double header against Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia College and State University (2-1). Tampa needed an extra frame to take the first game 6-5, then finished the day with a 3-1 victory.

In the first game, the Spartans found themselves down 5-0 in the bottom of fifth. Tampa then got on the board on a Ken Gregory double to left center scoring Jared Simon. Gregory would then score on a Jesus Barroso single. UT would score one more time in the inning to cut the GCSU lead to two. Read the rest of this entry »

Baseball America previews Division 2 and Division 3

Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher. Read the rest of this entry »

Division II College World Series Recap 5/27

Ouachita Baptist 12 Tampa 10

SAUGET, Ill. – Down seven runs after three innings, the fourth-ranked Ouachita Baptist baseball team battled back and did the unbelievable by sending No. 3 Tampa home with a 12-10 come-from-behind victory against the Spartans during Tuesday’s NCAA Division II College World Series play at GSC Ballpark.

“Our team was resillant tonight,” Tigers head coach Scott Norwood said. “They did it all and hung together. They deserve all the credit. You’re never going to be the best unless you beat the best. Tampa is the two-time defending champs and it was a great accomplishment from our program to go out there and fight back to get the win.”

Mount Olive 6 Ouachita Baptist 5

SAUGET, ILL. – Top-ranked Mount Olive used four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally from a 5-2 deficit against No. 4 ranked Ouachita Baptist en route to a 6-5 victory in a first round game that began Sunday night and concluded Monday morning at GCS Ballpark.

The Trojans improve to 55-6 and advance to play the winner of the Ashland and Tampa game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., while Ouachita Baptist, playing in its first World Series, falls to 47-15, and will play the loser of that game Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Read the rest of this entry »

Day 2 of the D-2 CWS PPD

Ouachita Baptist and Mount Olive was suspended in the seventh inning with the score tied at 2. The teams will head back on the field at 11 am tomorrow to be followed by Tampa against Ashland, Franklin Pierce and Shippensburg, with the nightcap featuring Sonoma vs Central Missouri State. SAUGET, ILL., May 20, 2008 – The field is set and beginning on Saturday, eight teams from across the country embark on their quest for an NCAA Division II baseball national championship.

SIU Edwardsville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, along with the village of Sauget and the Gateway Grizzlies, will co-host this year’s World Series at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois, home of the Frontier League’s Grizzlies. Tampa Head Coach Joe Urso named South Region Coach of the Year

TAMPA, Fla. – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced its 2008 NCAA II South Region teams and awards winners, naming Head Coach Joe Urso South Region Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year. Three Spartans were named to the second team, while sophomore closer Anthony Perez was selected to the first team.

A native of Miami, Fla., Perez has been among the national leaders in saves all season, and is currently tied for first in NCAA Division II with 17 saves. The 6-0, 200-pound right-handed pitcher has posted a 2.22 earned run average this season with 57 strikeouts in 48.2 innings, as well as a 4-1 record to anchor the Spartan bullpen.
