Texas’ Corey Knebel Named 2011 NCBWA Stopper of the Year

OMAHA, Neb. — Texas relief pitcher Corey Knebel is the 2011 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Tuesday at the College World Series.

Knebel, the NCBWA Freshman Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, set the Texas freshmen record with 19 saves and was 3-2 with a 1.13 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He allowed just 28 hits and seven earned runs, while holding opponents to a .151 batting average. With two saves in Super Regional play, he has posted the most saves of any pitcher in the nation this season. In addition, he has made 38 appearances, the most in the Big 12 this year. 2011 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the midseason watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Thursday.

Leading the elite field with a nation-best 13 saves is East Tennessee State’s Bo Reeder. The junior right-hander owns a 1.77 ERA and had registered 24 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas RHP Chance Ruffin wins NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award

Irvine, Calif. — Texas relief pitcher Chance Ruffin is the 2010 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Saturday in Omaha on the opening day of the College World Series.

Ruffin ranks second in the nation with a microscopic 1.11 earned run average, which was the Longhorns’ lowest single-season ERA since 1982 and fifth best all-time. The junior from Austin, Texas, compiled a 6-1 record and 14 saves and fanned 97 batters in just 64.2 innings.

NCBWA Announces Finalists for 2010 Stopper of the Year Award

Irvine, Calif. (NCBWA) — Five of college baseball’s top relief specialists have been selected as finalists for the sixth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Wednesday.

This year’s finalists include NCAA saves leaders Kevin Arico of Virginia and Neil Holland of Louisville, along with Chris Dennis of Portland, Chance Ruffin of Texas and Jordan Swagerty of Arizona State.

Leading the elite field with a nation-best 11 saves is Virginia’s Kevin Arico.  The junior right-hander owns a 2.37 ERA and had registered 27 strikeouts in 19.0 innings pitched.

STOPPEROFTHEYEAR Irvine, Calif. (NCBWA) — Forty players have been named to the initial watch list for the sixth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Thursday.

Last year’s Stopper of the Year winner, Addison Reed of San Diego State, headlines the list of preseason nominees for the 2010 award. Reed recorded a nation-leading 20 saves in 20 opportunities last season, finished the year with a microscopic 0.65 earned run average and 38 strikeouts over his 27.2 innings of work. He allowed only seven walks, with two of those being intentional passes and his save total was a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference season record.

San Diego State’s Addison Reed Named 2009 NCBWA Stopper of the Year

Birmingham, Ala. — San Diego State relief pitcher Addison Reed is the 2009 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Saturday in Omaha on the opening day of the College World Series.

Reed recorded a nation-leading 20 saves in 20 opportunities this season. He finished the season with a microscopic 0.65 earned run average and 38 strikeouts over his 27.2 innings of work. Reed has allowed only seven walks, with two of those being intentional passes. Only one of the 20 hits he allowed in 2009 went for extra bases (a double vs. Nevada on Feb. 26).

His save total is a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference season record, breaking the old mark record of 17 set by Royce Ring during the 2002 season. The Aztec and conference career marks of 26 are held by Ring as well.
