College Baseball Hall of Fame Releases Latest Pitcher of the Year Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas —The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Friday the 25 pitchers on the newest edition of the Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List.

The winner of the Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond Sports, will be announced on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the annual College Baseball Night of Champions. The event features the presentation of numerous awards and the induction ceremony for this year’s Hall of Fame class.

“The pitchers on this list continue to demonstrate excellence on the mound,” said award co-chair Landon Holly. “As we’ve progressed through the season, we’ve been able to narrow down the list, but we’ve also added some players who’ve excelled in the second half of the regular season.”

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

With the last weekend before conference play in the books, Creighton (20-5), Illinois State (19-7), and Bradley (17-8), sit atop the MVC standings with only their midweek matchups to prepare them for next weekend. Noticeably, Wichita State (18-11) has dropped out of the top-3 and now sits in fifth place behind Evansville (15-9). The Missouri Valley Conference enters its last weekend of non-conference play, with many teams looking to finalize their lineups and pitching rotations before their conference series begin next week. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Atlantic 10

The Charlotte 49ers dominated the Atlantic 10 conference in 2010 by winning the regular season title with a 20-7 conference record. Xavier finished two games back with a 18-9 record while Rhode Island finished in third place at 17-10. St. Louis and Fordham tied for fourth place with 15-12 records. George Washington and LaSalle tied for sixth with 14-13 records. Umass and St. Joe’s tied for eighth place at 13-14 while Dayton finished in tenth place at 12-15. St. Louis releases 2011 Schedule

St.LouisBaseballSaint Louis head baseball coach Darin Hendrickson announced the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions’ 2011 schedule today. The slate features a nonconference schedule that includes perennial powers Arkansas and Kansas. SLU will play a number of regional rivals, including Missouri State, SIU Edwardsville, Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois, as well as a 24-game A-10 schedule.

Louisville Regional Day 2 Recap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fueled by strong pitching from Matt Koch and Neil Holland, and a key three-run homer in the first inning by Phil Wunderlich, the No. 7 national seed Louisville baseball team powered into the championship game of the 2010 NCAA Regional with a 7-1 win over 17th-ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.

With the win, Louisville improves to 50-12 overall and will play on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium against the winner of Sunday’s noon elimination game between Vanderbilt (42-18) and Illinois State. Saturday’s win also clinched the first 50-win season in Louisville baseball history. Tickets are still available for Sunday’s NCAA Regional games and can be purchased in person at Jim Patterson Stadium starting at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior first baseman Andrew Clark and sophomore second baseman Ryan Wright each hit home runs to lead the No. 7 Louisville baseball team to an 11-2 win over Saint Louis during Friday’s opening day of action at the NCAA Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium.

With the win, the top-seeded Cardinals (49-12) advance to the winner’s bracket game against No. 2 seeded Vanderbilt, an 8-7 winner in 13 innings over No. 3 Illinois State. First pitch for the Cardinals and Commodores is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday and single game tickets will be available at Jim Patterson Stadium on Saturday morning.

METAIRIE, La. – Pinch hitter Wet Delatte lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift No. 3 LSU to a 6-5 victory over Southern Mississippi Wednesday night in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic in front of 9,370 fans Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

After Southern Miss second baseman Taylor Walker launched a solo homer in the in the top of the twelfth, the Tigers (25-4) responded in the bottom of the frame when pinch hitter Mason Katz doubled off the wall in left field and Leon Landry ripped a triple into right that scored Katz and knotted the game at 5-5.

BATON ROUGE — A pair of RBI by catcher Micah Gibbs and five shutout innings by the LSU bullpen led the fourth-ranked Tigers to a 4-3 victory over UL-Lafayette Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (17-3) have won seven of their last 10 meetings with the Cajuns (11-10) since 2000 and lead the all-time series 46-22.

Foley’s Saturday Thoughts

AnthonyGallasKSU Anthony Gallas of Kent State went 5-6 at the plate while hitting for the cycle, driving in six runs, and scoring three times as the Golden Flashes defeated Winthrop 16-10. The cycle was the first by a Kent State player since Steve Smetana completed the feat in 1995. Kent State coach Scott Stricklin about Anthony Gallas, "He was really locked in and he hit the ball to all fields, He took the ball and pulled it and he hit it to the opposite field. That is the first time I have seen someone hit for the cycle in a while."
