The Southern Miss Golden Eagles won their opener on Friday night over the Southern Illinois Salukis by a score of 9-0. Ryan Belanger pitched a solid seven innings letting up only four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to pick up the victory. Southern Miss was led on offense by Trey Sutton who had two hits and three RBI’s in the victory.

Louisville also picked up a victory on Friday with a 4-0 victory over Northwestern State. Zack Pitts was wonderful on the mound for the Cardinals by pitching five shutout innings. Freshman Chris Dominguez hit a two run homer in the ninth inning to extend the lead to 3-0 and the Cardinals would tack on another run in the inning to set up the final scoreline.

The Golden Eagles will play Northwestern State on Saturday while Southern Illinois faces Louisville.
The University of Southern Mississippi will be hosting the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament this weekend with Louisville, Northwestern State, and Southern Illinois. Friday’s games are Louisville under new head coach Dan McDonnell facing off against Northwestern State at noon. Southern Illinois will face Southern Miss at 4pm on the opening day. Saturday’s match-ups will be Southern Illinois facing Louisville and Southern Miss facing Northwestern State. The final day of the tourney will be Northwestern State and Southern Illinois doing battle then the Cardinals and Eagles will end the tournament.

Corky Palmer did his media day yesterday in preparation for the upcoming season. He discusses many different parts of his program from the pitching staff to injuries with his squad. The full transcript and a video are available here.
Conference USA has finally posted the last of their season previews by talking about the Southern Miss Golden Eagles today. The Eagles are led by Corky Palmer who is entering his 10th season with the program and has been to the NCAA tournament four straight years. The preview is available here.

The Southern Miss Baseball Team is in the process of fixing up Pete Taylor Park to update it to become one of the top facilities in the country. The project will not be finished until June of 2007. The Hattiesburg American has checked in with head coach Corky Palmer to get his thoughts on the reconstruction here.
The Southern Miss baseball program had the opportunity this weekend to get on the field and scrimmage each other. Head Coach Corky Palmer ran his team through a 6 inning scrimmage to get some game action for his players. They will start the season on February 16th hosting Southern Illinois. The Southern Miss Baseball team start practice on Monday for the 2007 season. They return 18 letter winners including five position players to a team that went 39-23 last season. The team will try to win a regional this season as they are looking on qualifying for their fifth straight regional. The full article is available here.

The 2007 Signing period has started for College Baseball. The Boston College Eagles have signed 13 players including nine student-athletes from Massachusetts or Connecticut. This is a sign that Aoki will be focusing on dominating the recruiting trail with New England kids attending BC. We have a bunch of press releases on the rest of the country.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have released their 2007 Baseball Schedule. They are hosting the Coca-Cola Classic with Louisville, Southern Illinois, and Northwestern State competing in Hattiesburg. They do play eight NCAA Tournament teams from last season on the schedule which includes Alabama, Houston, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Rice, South Alabama, Troy and Tulane. They are expected to be a prominent player in the Southeast this year and make the NCAA Tournament. The full schedule is available here.
Southern Miss also has started building a new press box with 12 new luxury boxes for the 2007 season. This should bring their stadium up to the standards in the South. You can read more about the renovation at this link.
