2013 Conference USA Preseason Coaches Poll and Teams

Rice senior infielder Christian Stringer was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Owls junior right-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. Rice was chosen to win the league’s championship. The Owls have won either the regular season or tournament championship in each of its seven years as a member of C-USA. Southern Miss names Todd McInnis as Assistant Coach

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry announced Monday the return of former Golden Eagle pitching standout Todd McInnis as volunteer assistant coach.

Southern Miss releases 2013 Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ten games against Southeastern Conference opponents, as well as a total of 22 contests against teams that reached the postseason a year ago, highlight the 2013 Southern Miss baseball schedule released Thursday.

Hicks was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year, while Rice sophomore left-hander Austin Kubitza was named the preseason Pitcher of the Year. Rice was chosen to win the league’s championship. Rhode Island:  Keaney 3 Navy 2

Darkness forced the suspension of Game Two in the Keaney-Navy World Series on Friday evening, but when play resumed on Saturday, sophomore Joe Landi scored on redshirt junior Pat Fortunato’s single up the middle to give Keaney the 3-2 win, as well as its fifth consecutive KNWS title. Baseball America releases 2011-2012 Recruiting Class Rankings

Baseball America has released their 2011-2012 Recruiting Class rankings for the class that will be eligible for the start of the 2012 season. Leading the pack is the Vanderbilt Commodores which got a first round pick in Tyler Beede among other talented players to Nashville. The rest of the top five is filled out by Texas, Southern Miss, NC State, and Ole Miss.

Brent Shelton added to Southern Miss Coaching Staff

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head baseball coach Scott Berry announced Friday the appointment of Brent Shelton as an assistant coach.

Shelton comes to Southern Miss after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant for coach Jeff Johnson at Chipola College where he served as recruiting coordinator, as well as coordinating administrative duties and working with the Indian hitters and infielders. 2011 NCAA Atlanta Regional: Day 2 Recap

Georgia Tech 6 Southern Mississippi 2

A battle between two struggling offenses resulted in a second inning offensive awakening for the Georgia Tech bats as the Yellow Jackets (41-20) defeated Southern Miss (39-18) by a 6-2 margin. Tech scored all the runs in would need in the bottom of the second when Daniel Palka began the inning with a home run to right. His solo shot was the first of four straight hits for the Jackets. Brandon Thomas cleared the bases with a three run homer to left to give Tech a 5-0 lead. The Jackets poked across another run in the third on a RBI single by shortstop Jacob Esch. It took 32 innings for Southern Mississippi to hit the scoreboard when the Golden Eagles ended their scoreless streak on a RBI groundout from B.A. Vollmuth and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Graeter in the eith inning. Tech was backed by a solid outing from starter Jed Bradley (7-3) who gave up eight hits and retired four on strikes to give Tech all the room it would need to easily pass USM. 2011 NCAA Atlanta Regional: Day 1 Recap

Luis Pollorena and Caleb Reed worked together to give 3rd seeded Mississippi State an eight-hit shutout of 2nd seed Southern Miss in the 3-0 win for the Bulldogs to open the Atlanta regional. Facing Southern Miss for the second time this season, MSU starter Luis Pollorena (7-5) pulled off an even more impressive performance this time around by pitching six innings giving up five hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Caleb Reed earned his 12th save of the season through three innings of three hit baseball throwing in four strikeouts and a walk. Read the rest of this entry »
