Southern Illinois adds Ryan Strain to Coaching Staff

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois interim head baseball coach Ken Henderson announced Wednesday that Ryan Strain has been hired as a new assistant coach with the program.

Strain comes to SIU after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Northern Colorado. His main responsibilities with the Salukis include coaching hitting and infield defense while also assisting with all recruiting efforts and day-to-day operations of the program. 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll

ST. LOUIS – Illinois State, which returns a dominating young pitching staff and solid depth from last year’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving four of eight first-place votes.

SIU Closer Lee Weld out for the Season

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois sophomore right-handed pitcher Lee Weld is going to miss the 2011 season with a shoulder injury, interim head coach Ken Henderson announced Monday.

SIU names Ken Henderson as Interim Head Coach

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois associate head baseball coach Ken Henderson was named the interim head coach for the 2011 season, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia announced Tuesday.

SIU Baseball Coach Dan Callahan Passes Away

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University head baseball coach Dan Callahan died Monday at his home in Carterville, Ill.

Callahan, 52, lost a courageous battle with neurotropic melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer. He is survived by his wife, Stacy, daughters, Alexa (19) and Carly (14), and parents Ann and Gene. Continue reading SIU Baseball Coach Dan Callahan Passes Away

P.J. Finigan added to Southern Illinois Coaching Staff

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois head baseball coach Dan Callahan announced Tuesday that the Salukis have hired P.J. Finigan as the new assistant coach in charge of the SIU pitching staff.

Finigan, who was an infielder/pitcher for the Salukis from 2002-05, was the 2005 Joe Carter Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers and pitched for four seasons in its system.

MVC ST. LOUIS – Wichita State, which returns a dominating young pitching staff and solid depth from last year’s Missouri Va lley Conference Tournament championship squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving seven of eight first-place votes.

The Shockers tallied 57 points and were a close favorite over second-place pick and 2009 regular-season champion Missouri State (52 points).  Creighton, who secured the remaining first-place vote and 50 points overall, was picked to finish in the third position.

Southern Illinois adds 10 for 2010-2011 Season

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois head baseball coach Dan Callahan announced Wednesday that the Salukis have signed 10 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play baseball and attend school beginning in the fall of 2010.

The Salukis inked nine high school athletes and one from the junior college ranks. Of the 10 signees, six are pitchers (one left-hander and five right-handers), two are infielders and there is one catcher and one outfielder in the class.

Dan Callahan Named 2009 MVC Most Courageous Award Winner

DanCallahanSIU ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Thursday that Dan Callahan, head baseball coach at Southern Illinois University, has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the league’s Most Courageous Award.

The Missouri Valley Conference presents the Most Courageous Award to a past or present student-athlete, coach or university administrator who demonstrates unusual courage in the face of personal illness, adversity or tragedy and whose behavior reflects honor on the institution or the Conference. Individuals receiving the award might also have performed heroic feats or otherwise inspired others.
