2012 CBD Season Preview: Missouri Valley Conference

In June of 2011, perennial baseball power Dallas Baptist University was granted a provisional season with the Missouri Valley Conference. In essence a year-long test run, the MVC was then planning to vote on DBU’s membership after the duration of the season in May of 2012. While the movement to bring DBU—who made it all the way to the Super-Regionals last season before falling to Cal—was seen as an effort to boost the MVC’s power ranking, it was also met by skepticism from some MVC teams citing travel time and costs as concerns. As a result, the Patriots were offered the provisional membership rather than acceptance in to the conference. Continue reading


2012 Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

ST. LOUIS – Missouri State, which returns a dominating young pitching staff and a wealth of depth from last year’s squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving five of eight first-place votes. Continue reading


SIU adds Joe Burke to Coaching Staff

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The SIU baseball team has added Joe Burke to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2012 season. The former Yankees draft pick will coach the Saluki catchers and also assist with hitters.

Burke joins the Salukis after completing a seven-year minor league playing career in 2011. He was a catcher at St. John’s University where he graduated with a degree in sports management. As a senior, he was voted team MVP and led the Red Storm to a Big East title and a spot in the NCAA Regional finals. Continue reading


Major Renovations Planned at SIU’s Abe Martin Field

CARBONDALE, Ill. – In the midst of a renaissance, which has included recent additions and renovations to many of the athletic department facilities on the Southern Illinois University campus, the athletic department is now planning a major renovation project at Abe Martin Field, home of the SIU baseball team.

The plan includes a renovation of the seating bowl, press box and dugouts as well as the addition of stadium lights, a synthetic grass playing surface with a new drainage system and a security fence around the facility. Continue reading


Southern Illinois releases 2012 Schedule

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois baseball team has released its 2012 schedule, which is highlighted with a 14-game home stand and series against three opponents who earned bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Southern Illinois names Ken Henderson Head Coach

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University Athletic Director Mario Moccia announced Friday, July 8, that Ken Henderson has been named the head baseball coach of the Salukis.

Henderson served as SIU’s interim head coach for the entire 2011 season after the passing of Dan Callahan on Nov. 15, 2010. Henderson becomes the seventh head coach in the history of the program. Continue reading

2011 CBD Missouri Valley Conference Awards

2011 College Baseball Daily MVC Player of the Year – Chris O’Brien, Wichita State

Chris O’Brien of Wichita State is 2011 CBD Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. The junior catcher from Tulsa, OK, absolutely knocked the cover off the ball in his first full season of duty, hitting .410, tallying 100 hits and 25 doubles, while managing a .495 on-base-percentage—all league bests. His 100 hits were also good for second-most in the nation. O’Brien placed in to the top 3 in the Valley in homeruns (10), RBI (70), and runs scored (56). O’Brien, who hit above .500 for the majority of conference-play, also led the conference with 31 multi-hit games and finishes the season on a career-best 29-game hitting streak. He is a finalist for both the Johnny Bench (best collegiate catcher) and Dick Howser (top collegiate player as voted on by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) awards.
