HAMMOND – One week out from the season opener, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball coaching staff has a dilemma on its hands. With only three outfield spots and a fourth place in the lineup for a designated hitter, head coach Jay Artigues and his staff need to find a way to work at least seven outfield bats into the lineup. However, with one of the more potent outfield crews in the Southland Conference being the expected end result of any combination, the Lion coaches believe its a good problem to have. FRISCO, Texas – UTSA senior Michael Rockett, the 2008 Southland Conference Baseball Player of the Year, highlights a talented list of players on the 2009 preseason all-conference teams, the league office announced Wednesday in conjunction with the release of the preseason polls.
A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Rockett led a powerful UTSA lineup to its second consecutive regular-season title in 2008. A 2008 second-team All-American, Rockett was the first conference player of the year at UTSA since 2002. A constant threat at the plate, Rockett pounded out a .360 batting average, which ranked ninth in the conference. He also finished third in the league in hits (89) and runs batted in (68). FRISCO, Texas – UTSA has been favored to win its third consecutive Southland Conference regular-season baseball championship by a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced Wednesday.
The Roadrunners received five first-place votes and 110 points in the coaches’ poll and five first-place votes and 111 points in the SID poll. UTSA, which finished with the best conference record in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, finished with a 39-19 overall record, tying the school record for wins. The Roadrunners welcome back 22 letterwinners, 10 pitchers and six position starters from a team that was 22-8 in league play to finish atop the West Division.

HAMMOND – To say the 2009 Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team’s pitching staff has a tough act to follow is a bit of an understatement. The 2008 Lions claimed the Southland Conference team ERA title with a 4.26 mark (244 ER/516.0 IP), took the league’s team strikeout title with 481 punchouts and boasted the individual league champ in each category in Brent Varnado (3.33 ERA) and Wade Miley (119 K) en route to a 32-27 season and a trip to the SLC Tournament semifinals.
