The Lumberjack baseball team kept the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at bay for the majority of the afternoon, but MVSU was able to scrape across a run in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a season-opening 4-3 win over SFA at the rain-soaked ULM Warhawk Classic.

HAMMOND – One week out from the season opener, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball coaching staff has a dilemma on its hands. With only three outfield spots and a fourth place in the lineup for a designated hitter, head coach Jay Artigues and his staff need to find a way to work at least seven outfield bats into the lineup. However, with one of the more potent outfield crews in the Southland Conference being the expected end result of any combination, the Lion coaches believe its a good problem to have.

HAMMOND – According to head coach #Jay Artigues#, last year’s Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team had a strong leader on the roster in the form of catcher Matthew Schexnayder. Schexnayder’s graduation following the 2008 campaign left a vacuum in that crucial role, but, also according to Artigues, this year’s group of backstops is more than ready to step in.

FRISCO, Texas – UTSA senior Michael Rockett, the 2008 Southland Conference Baseball Player of the Year, highlights a talented list of players on the 2009 preseason all-conference teams, the league office announced Wednesday in conjunction with the release of the preseason polls.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Rockett led a powerful UTSA lineup to its second consecutive regular-season title in 2008. A 2008 second-team All-American, Rockett was the first conference player of the year at UTSA since 2002. A constant threat at the plate, Rockett pounded out a .360 batting average, which ranked ninth in the conference. He also finished third in the league in hits (89) and runs batted in (68).

FRISCO, Texas – UTSA has been favored to win its third consecutive Southland Conference regular-season baseball championship by a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced Wednesday.

The Roadrunners received five first-place votes and 110 points in the coaches’ poll and five first-place votes and 111 points in the SID poll. UTSA, which finished with the best conference record in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, finished with a 39-19 overall record, tying the school record for wins. The Roadrunners welcome back 22 letterwinners, 10 pitchers and six position starters from a team that was 22-8 in league play to finish atop the West Division.

The first of a five-part weekly breakdown of the 2009 Southeastern Louisiana University Baseball Team leading up to Opening Week.

HAMMOND – To say the 2009 Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team’s pitching staff has a tough act to follow is a bit of an understatement. The 2008 Lions claimed the Southland Conference team ERA title with a 4.26 mark (244 ER/516.0 IP), took the league’s team strikeout title with 481 punchouts and boasted the individual league champ in each category in Brent Varnado (3.33 ERA) and Wade Miley (119 K) en route to a 32-27 season and a trip to the SLC Tournament semifinals.

HAMMOND – Looking to capitailze on the momentum of its second consecutive 30-win season, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team added one of its most promising recruiting classes under head coach Jay Artigues when eight highly-touted recruits signed National Letters of Intent during the NCAA’s early signing period to join the Lions in 2010.

The eight-member class includes six Louisiana high schoolers, a Mississippi junior college product and a North Dakota native.

Seven more teams have released their 2009 College Baseball Schedules

The CBB has come across 7 more College Baseball Schedules- Michigan, Columbia, Gardner Webb, St. Louis, Kansas, Southeastern Louisiana, and Virginia Tech.

Gardner Webb will play 36 home games out of a 56 2009 College Baseball Schedule. First up on the slate will be 4 game series against Canisius staring on the 20th of February.

Gardner Webb will get the Atlantic Sun Conference started with a series against Presbyterian. They will wrap the season on May 14th against Winthrop and then the Conference Tournament will start the following weekend.
