2011 MLB Draft News and Notes for August 5th
The MLB Signing Deadline is fast approaching as all teams have to midnight on August 15th to sign their prospects or they will head to college. Here is the latest news and notes from around the country.
Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported that Red Sox first round pick and 26th overall selection Blake Swihart took batting practice on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. Swihart is currently committed to Texas where he will play for Augie Garrido. If I had to guess right now, I would expect the Red Sox to sign Swihart for over the $1.2 million due to him with the slotting system. Read the rest of this entry »

Former USF star taking on a New Challenge
Former South Florida baseball player Ryan Lockwood is taking on a new challenge now as he is preparing to become a Navy SEAL. Lockwood played three seasons under head coach Lelo Prado with his best season coming in 2008 when he had a 30 game hitting streak while being named a Freshman All-American. Last season, Coach Prado started receiving phone calls from Lockwood’s parents questioning what was going on with Ryan’s body as he was losing weight. GREENVILLE, N.C. – Carolina was down to its final out Wednesday night against No. 29 East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. but staged a dramatic comeback in the top of the ninth inning to take a 5-4 win over the Pirates. Jesse Wierzbicki came through with the clutch hit driving in a pair of runs when he singled to left with two down in the ninth.
