2013 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and Teams

sunbelt_thumb.jpgNEW ORLEANS – The Florida Atlantic Owls have been tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the 2013 Sun Belt Conference baseball title, the league announced on Monday.

FAU won the SBC regular season title in 2012 behind a 32-22 overall record and a 19-8 record in SBC play. This season, the Owls return six starters from that squad and four starting pitchers, including 2013 All-SBC Preseason selections pitcher Austin Gomber and first baseman Mark Nelson. South Alabama releases 2013 Schedule

MOBILE, Ala. – Four NCAA Regional participants from a year ago, including one that reached the College World Series, highlight the University of South Alabama baseball 2013 schedule.

The Jaguars will play three of their first four non-conference series – and their first seven games – at Stanky Field beginning with Stephen F. Austin (Feb.15-17) to kick off the season, followed by a midweek contest against Alabama State (Feb. 20). Read the rest of this entry »

2012 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

NEW ORLEANS – The Panthers of FIU and the Trojans of Troy have been tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the 2012 Sun Belt Conference baseball title in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

FIU, which finished second overall in the standings in 2011, returns five starters to an offense that led the SBC in batting average, home runs and runs scored. The Panthers finished last season 20-9-1 in conference play. FIU received four first-place votes from the coaches and finished with 93 points. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 Dairy Queen Classic moved to Arizona

The Dairy Queen Classic featuring Minnesota, South Alabama, Oklahoma State, and Washington State will be moved to Tucson, Arizona according to Washington State head coach Donnie Marbut. Sun Belt Conference Announces New Baseball Tournament Format

NEW ORLEANS – Following one of the most successful seasons in Sun Belt Conference baseball history the SBC baseball coaches decided to implement a new tournament format for the upcoming 2011 SBC Baseball Championship.

The new round-robin format, which is similar in scope to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, will feature eight of the ten SBC teams competing against each other in two four-team pools with the team with the best record in each pool advancing to the tournament’s championship game. Mark Calvi named South Alabama Assistant Coach/Head Coach in Waiting

MarkCalviUSA MOBILE, Ala. – In the three weeks since University of South Alabama head baseball coach Steve Kittrell announced his retirement at the end of the 2011 season, Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann has received interest from numerous qualified candidates to take over the reins of the program.  In the end, Erdmann looked at the kings of the NCAA diamond to find Kittrell’s successor.

Mark Calvi, assistant coach for College World Series champion South Carolina, was named associate head coach/head coach in waiting at South Alabama Thursday.  He is scheduled to be introduced Friday at a 1 p.m. press conference at the Mitchell Center, and will become the program’s fifth head coach at the conclusion of the 2011 campaign.

Steve Kittrell to retire after 2011 Season

SteveKitrellSouthAlabama MOBILE, Ala. – He’s led the University of South Alabama baseball program to more than 1,000 victories, numerous NCAA Tournament appearances and Sun Belt Conference championships, and had more than 100 of his student-athletes go on to sign professional contracts.  His contributions to the program, as both a player and a coach, led to his induction in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

With more than 30 years of service to Jaguar baseball, head coach Steve Kittrell’s amazing run at USA will be coming to a close.  Kittrell announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2011 season, Wednesday at a press conference at the Mitchell Center.
