PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the 2009 baseball season underway, sophomore third baseman Greg Hopkins of St. John’s has been tabbed the first BIG EAST Player of the Week. Sophomore RHP Sean Black of Seton Hall has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Hopkins helped St. John’s to a 2-1 showing at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, batting .538 with a .923 slugging percentage in three games. He had multiple hits in all three games and had multiple extra-base hits in each of the Red Storm’s wins. He went 3-for-6 with a double and a triple in a 15-6 win against Penn State and was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in an 18-3 win against Iowa. Continue reading Big East Players of the Week→

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — On Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15, the Seton Hall Pirates baseball team will host the first annual Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament as they welcome NJIT, Iona, and Northeastern to Owen T. PETERSBURG, FL – The home and away team designations for the inaugural BIG EAST-Big TEN Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, have been determined by the participating conference offices, it was announced today. Each team has been designated the home side for at least one of its three games in this first-ever NCAA Division I college baseball challenge. PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville, the 2008 BIG EAST tournament champion, has been unanimously chosen as the favorite to win the 2009 conference championship by the 12 BIG EAST head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams. In addition, Louisville swept both 2009 preseason individual honors. Junior third baseman Chris Dominguez was honored as Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, while junior Justin Marks was unanimously selected as Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Two of the nation’s most prominent collegiate athletic conferences have come to an agreement to participate in a unique and ground-breaking season-opening baseball tournament in Florida.
