Florida wins 2011 SEC Championship

Third-seeded Florida (45-16) captured its first SEC Tournament Championship since 1991 with a 5-0 shutout of fourth-seeded Vanderbilt (47-10) on Sunday afternoon in front of 7,845 fans at Regions Park. It was the sixth SEC Tourney crown for the Gators, which previously brought home the hardware in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1988 and 1991. Continue reading

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – SEC CHAMPS!!! Second ranked South Carolina (44-12, 22-8 SEC) broke out of the gates with an early two-run lead and behind solid work from starter Colby Holmes and three relievers the Gamecocks defeated Alabama (32-24, 14-16) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to claim at least a share of the SEC Championship. It is the school’s third SEC Championship in baseball and the first since the 2002 regular season. Carolina also claims at least a share of the SEC Eastern Division title, the school’s fifth (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2011). South Carolina heads to Hoover, Ala. for the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face the No. 8 seed Auburn at 5:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday May 25 at Regions Park. Continue reading

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Christian Walker drove in three runs and Peter Mooney, Scott Wingo and Evan Marzilli were a combined 9-for-14 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI as second ranked South Carolina bounced back with a 6-3 win over Alabama on Friday evening in SEC baseball action. Carolina is 43-12 and 21-8 in the SEC, tied for first place with Florida and Vanderbilt going into the final day of action in league play. Alabama is 32-23 and 14-15 in the SEC. The rubber game of the series is set for 1 p.m. ET and will be televised live on CSS as well as on Time Warner Cable channel 506 in Columbia. It can also be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network. Sophomore Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) delivered a three-run homer in the 12th to lift No. 5 Florida (39-13/20-7 SEC) over No. 2 Vanderbilt (42-8/20-7 SEC), 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field. With the dramatic victory, the Gators are now locked into a three-way tie for the league lead with the Commodores and No. 3 South Carolina (41-11/20-7 SEC) entering the final weekend of the regular season. UF will host Kentucky (24-28/7-20 SEC) starting on Thursday night at McKethan Stadium, while the Gamecocks finish at Alabama (31-22/13-14 SEC) and Vanderbilt travels to Georgia (26-26/15-12 SEC).
