2011 Top MLB Draft Prospects by Fanhouse.com

Matt Barnes leads Team USA to 8-1 Win over Canada

Tokyo, Japan – In a clash between a pair of unbeaten teams in pool play at the V FISU World University Championships, Matt Barnes (Connecticut) held Canada scoreless through seven innings and helped USA capture the No. 1 seed in Group A Monday night with an 8-1 win at Yokohama Stadium.

Barnes (3-0), who gave up just three hits, did not allow a runner to reach second base and finished with eight punch outs as USA improved its record to 14-2 on the summer. Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) made his fourth appearance working two-third of an inning where he allowed a run on two hits. Cal State Fullerton’s Nick Ramirez entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and struck out Nic Lendvoy to get out of the jam. The left-hander retired all four batters he faced which included a pair of strikeouts.

Team USA loses to Chinese Taipei 3-1

Team USA completes sweep over Korea with 5-3 victory

SpringerUConn DURHAM, N.C. – George Springer (Connecticut) roped a pair of doubles on his way to a three-hit performance and Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) struck out five for his second win of the summer as Team USA completed the five-game series sweep of Korea with a 5-3 win Sunday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the win the Collegiate National Team (CNT) improves to 6-0 during its summer tour.

Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, USA scratched across a pair of runs to take a 5-2 advantage and coasted to the series sweep. Peter O’Brien (Bethune-Cookman) drove in the game-winning run on a bunt single towards the left side of the pitcher’s mound scoring Springer from second, who singled to start the frame. CNT’s newest member, Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt), scored the second run when Nolan Fontana (Florida) reached on an error during his sac bunt attempt moving O’Brien over to third and pushing Esposito across.

Team USA defeats Fayetteville 8-3

SeanGilmartin CARY, N.C. – Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) fanned five and Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) collected three hits as Team USA picked up its first win of the summer, 8-3, Tuesday night over the Fayetteville Swampdogs of the Coastal Plain League. The game was called after 8 innings due to lightning in the area.

Gilmartin (1-0) went five innings in the start allowing two runs (both unearned) and walking one. Brett Mooneyham (Stanford) gave up a run in two innings of relief work, while freshman Brian Johnson (Florida) worked the final inning.

2010 Team USA Collegiate National Team Roster Announced

USABaseballPic CARY, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Sunday night the 22 members of its 2010 Collegiate National Team. The roster is headlined by pitchers Gerrit Cole (UCLA), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) and infielder Brad Miller (Clemson), who were all members of the 2009 National Team.

This year’s squad consists of five infielders, four outfielders, two catchers, nine pitchers and a pair of two-way players. The Collegiate National Team was selected after seven days of trials that included six intra-squad games and practices as the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Team USA is comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States.

Team USA Collegiate National Team Trials: Game 6 Recap

MattJensenCalPoly CARY, N.C. — Matt Jensen’s (Cal Poly) grand slam in the top of the sixth inning lifted the Red team to a 5-3 win over the Blue squad in Game 6 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials Sunday afternoon at the National Training Complex (NTC). With the win Red improved to 3-1-2, while Blue dropped to 2-1-3.

Team USA Collegiate National Team Trials: Game 5 Recap

BradMillerClemson Cary, N.C. — Brad Miller (Clemson), Austin Nola (LSU) and Anthony Rendon (Rice) each collected two hits to help the Blue team to a 5-3 win over the Red squad Saturday afternoon in Game 5 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Center (NTC).

With the game knotted up at three in the bottom of the seventh, Nola laced a single through the left side with one out scoring Steve Rodriguez (UCLA) putting Blue (2-1-2) up 4-3. Rodriguez, who was 0-for-2 with two runs, drew his second walk of the afternoon to start the frame then moved into scoring position after swiping second base setting up Nola’s game-winning hit. Miller followed with a single through the left side and Rendon reached on an error that scored Nola for the games final run and giving Blue a 5-3 victory.

USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials Recap for Game 2

CARY, N.C. — Sophomore’s Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) and Drew Maggi (Arizona State) combined for six of the Blue squads 10 hits in the second game of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Complex (NTC). The nine-inning affair ended in a five-all tie when Peter O’Brien (Bethune-Cookman) singled home a pair of runs in the eighth frame.

Trailing 5-3 with one out in the eighth Maggi drew a walk, which was followed by a single off the bat of Bradley, Jr. Both runners advanced on a strikeout and trotted home on O’Brien’s lone hit of the evening back up the middle.
