CBD Column: Pac-12 Weekend Preview

The No. 6 ranked Bruins will travel to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears this weekend. It will be UCLA’s first visit to Baylor in program history. UCLA (2-1) is coming off a series victory against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Bruins dropped the opener 6-2 in 10 innings Friday night, but rallied on Saturday by defeating the Gophers 14-0. On Sunday, sophomore starter Grant Watson kept the Gophers quiet by throwing six scoreless innings and tallying a career high eight strikeouts. Baylor (1-3) is coming off a win at home Tuesday against Texas State. The Bears were swept on the road at UC Irvine last weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

2013 WAC Preseason Coaches Poll

WACLogoDENVER - Dallas Baptist has been selected as the favorite to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s 10 head coaches.

The Patriots received 80 points and eight first place votes after a 41-19 season last year as an independent. DBU advanced to its second-straight NCAA Tournament last season. DBU joins the WAC this season after playing as a Division I independent the past nine seasons. As an independent, the Patriots have made three trips to the NCAA tournament, including an NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2011. Read the rest of this entry »

2012 WAC Preseason Coaches Poll Released

DENVER – Fresno State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2012 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. The coaches also voted on a preseason all-WAC team with New Mexico State leading the way as it placed five players on the team. New Mexico State junior catcher Zac Fisher was named the preseason player of the year, while San Jose State junior Zack Jones was picked the preseason pitcher of the year. NCBWA Names 2012 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

Mark O’Brien named Associate Head Coach at San Jose State

Former San Jose State infielder and team captain Mark O’Brien is returning to his alma mater as associate head coach. Head coach Sam Piraro made the announcement.

O’Brien makes the short trip over to San Jose State from Santa Clara University, where he was the head coach of the Broncos for the past 10 seasons. O’Brien posted 258 wins at the helm of the Santa Clara program, becoming only the third coach in the 125-year history of the team to reach the 200-win milestone. Read the rest of this entry »

San Jose State’s Sam Piraro Awarded New 3-Year Contract

San Jose, Calif.—–Sam Piraro, the winningest baseball coach in San Jose State’s 100-plus year history, agreed to a new three-year contract through the 2014 season. Athletics director Tom Bowen made the announcement.

Piraro recently completed his 24th season as the Spartans’ head coach directing the Spartans to a 35-26 overall win-loss record. He ranks 29th nationally among active NCAA Division I baseball coaches with 784 coaching victories. San Jose State has 17 30-win and five additional 40-win seasons since he took over as head coach for his first season in 1987. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 John Olerud Award Watch List

All-WAC Baseball Teams Announced

MESA, AZ – The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2011 all-WAC baseball teams and postseason awards as selected by the league’s head coaches. Fresno State junior outfielder Dusty Robinson was named the Player of the Year and Fresno State senior Greg Gonzalez earned Pitcher of the Year honors. The Freshman of the Year award went to Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge. Hawai‘i’s Mike Trapasso was named WAC Coach of the Year.

West Coast Weekend Preview…Let it Snow?

The Bay Area is scheduled for some nasty weather this weekend, and there’s even snow possibly in the forecast in San Francisco for the first time since the 1970′s.  The USF Dons (0-4) look to turn around its season after a rough opening stretch against UCLA as they play UC Davis in a home/away/home series this weekend.  Weather will probably get in the way Friday with a double dip sometime either Saturday or Sunday.  I spoke with USF Head Coach Nino Giarratano this week about his teams efforts to rebound over the weekend.
