West Coast Conference Still Up For Grabs on Final Day

A lot of potential scenarios have been eliminated since we brought you everything that could potentially happen this weekend in the West Coast Conference, but there are still some things being battled out on the final day.

Pacific has been eliminated and Pepperdine and LMU are locked in, though they are still fighting for the No. 1 seed. But Gonzaga, San Diego and Santa Clara are still vying for the final two spots in the West Coast Conference Tournament.

Here’s how the West Coast Conference shakes out on the final day of regular season action:

What in the West Coast Conference is Going On?

After a three-year hiatus, the West Coast Conference re-established an end-of-the-season battle for supremacy. From 1999 to 2005, the West Coast Conference featured a championship series, pitting the two division champions against one another.

Prior to the 2006 season, with the comings and goings of conference realignment, the conference returned to a single division format, but kept the championship series until 2009.

For three years there was no championship series, but the West Coast Conference re-established a conference tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. last year. The San Diego Toreros won the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, defeating San Francisco, 2-0, in the finale.

But this year neither team  may make the four-squad face-off. San Francisco has already been eliminated with an 11-16 mark and San Diego sits 2.5 games back of first place Pepperdine. The Toreros have already finished their regular-season schedule with a 34-20 record and currently sit in fourth place with a 16-11 mark in conference.

Will that be enough to garner the Toreros a trip to Northern California next weekend? This weekend, San Diego will watch W.tv as three big series determine the outcome of the conference race and who will battle for the title next weekend:

Pepperdine (17-7) at Gonzaga (15-9)

Loyola Marymount (15-9) at Pacific (14-10)

St. Mary’s (eliminated) at Santa Clara (14-10)

Nick Rossetta Throws Shutout in Relief for Dirtbags

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State head coach Troy Buckley planned to pitch by committee on Tuesday, but had no idea he would need to go to his first reliever 11 pitches into the game or that he wouldn’t make another mound visit all night.

Senior reliever Nick Rossetta entered the game and completely shut down a high-powered San Diego offense for nine innings to lead Long Beach to a 6-1 victory at Blair Field.

SoCal Roundup: Two-Way Face Off on Mom’s Day

Two-way players are becoming more and more rare in the college baseball game, but their value has never been higher with the 11.7 scholarship limit. In Southern California, there have been a number of two-way studs, including Michael Lorenzen last year with Cal State Fullerton.

This year, Pepperdine’s Aaron Brown and San Diego’s Louie Lechich have been dynamic Sunday starters when they aren’t roaming the plains in centerfield and hitting bombs in the middle of their respective teams’ lineups. But who would come out on top when the two duo players faced off with each other? See who helped their squad win the big series rubber match in Malibu.

That plus rubber matches at San Diego State, Cal Poly, USC and Cal State Fullerton. Find out how things shook out on Sunday in Southern California. This Sunday Mother’s Day edition of the roundup includes video of a Gatorade/water bucket shower during an interview and a photo gallery from Santa Barbara. Continue reading

SoCal Roundup: Midweek Bubble Watch

The only two Southern California teams that seem secure in the postseason matched up for the second week in a row with No. 27 Pepperdine traveling to No. 7 Cal Poly this time. A familiar middle-of-the-lineup face who had been struggling seems to be back in the groove as he led his team to a victory.

It only took one swing in the UCLA/Fullerton game and Michael Cederoth had an unusual outing as he tried to lead San Diego State to a win at Long Beach State. Cederoth also tried to trim the national saves lead on Sam Moore, but Moore got into Irvine’s game at San Diego even though the ‘Eaters jumped out to a 13-2 lead.

That plus more in Tuesday’s Southern California college baseball roundup that features photo galleries from San Diego and UCLA:
