Staying close to home was a common theme for the SoCal midweek matchups for all but one team, which had one heck of a road trip just to get to their Tuesday matchup.
San Diego and San Diego State renewed their rivalry while USC faced off with former Trojan head coach Mike Gillespie. And LMU didn’t even have to travel east of Interstate 405 as the Lions faced off with yet another Pac-12 club.

Despite losing 5-2 to Cal on Monday in the final game of the rain-soaked USD Tournament, the San Diego Toreros are off to an 8-2 start this season. The key to the Toreros’ early-season success was a question mark entering the season.
After losing two catchers to the Draft and seeing the departure of three outfielders and two middle infielders that made significant contributions last season, San Diego was supposed to be struggling offensively. Oh yea…they also lost this guy too.
But even without the Golden Spikes Award Winner, Kris Bryant, the Toreros offense continues to roll along. Through Sunday, USD sported the top team batting average and second best slugging percentage in the nation. It was in the top five in on base percentage, home runs per game and were first in scoring after racking up five consecutive double-digit run performances. Granted four of those big offensive outbursts were against Northern Kentucky. But San Diego’s aggressive offensive approach both at the plate and on the bases has resulted in an exciting brand of baseball and success. Continue reading
There were five doubleheaders as teams tried to salvage as much playing time as possible after Mother Nature had wiped out several games on Friday and Saturday.
The much-anticipated series between No. 17 Cal Poly and USC finally got underway (and then quickly faced another rain delay). The squads got a pair of nine-inning games in and the results couldn’t have been more different.
One part of UCLA’s team tried to outdo itself for the third day in a row as the Bruins looked to stay unbeaten in the Irish Classic in Cary, NC.
Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside and San Diego State all looked for sweeps, even though that meant swiping both games of a doubleheader for the latter three squads. And Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge both tried to right the ship against Pac-12 opponents.
We’ve got your quick roundup of all the action in the area:
The rains again claimed most of the action in Southern California, but the teams on the road were able to get their games in (except for Long Beach State who fell victim to a ‘sub-freezing temperatures’ cancellation at Wichita State) and there were some really great matchups.
After missing him twice in Omaha last summer, UCLA finally had to face off with North Carolina State ace Carlos Rodon, but it was a different lefty that stole the show.
A pair of young top prospects took the mound in Eugene as Cal State Fullerton and Oregon battled to a one-run contest that wasn’t decided until the eighth inning.

“Rain! Rain! Go away! Don’t ever come back until baseball season is over.” (or something like that)
Instead of an exciting matchup between USC and Cal Poly or some tripleheader USD Tournament action, all there was to do in Los Angeles tonight was listen and watch games online since everything in Southern California was cancelled on Friday.
There still were some great games played by some SoCal squads. Could James Kaprielian overcome UCLA’s struggling offense? How would Thomas Eshelman respond after struggling his last outing?

Several Southern California college baseball squads take to the road this weekend with teams flying to the Pacific Northwest, North Carolina, across the Pacific and even to the country’s heartland.
And those teams might be the lucky ones as Southern California is being beset with rain that threatens to wipe out several scheduled games around the area.

After dropping their first game of the season, Southern California’s top ranked squads, No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and No. 9 UCLA, both bounced back with dramatic victories to ensure a series win.
It was a strong day in the Southland as 10 of the 11 SoCal teams in action scored victories. Long Beach State’s series sweep at the hands of No. 10 Vanderbilt and “one of the best pitching staffs I’ve ever seen,” according to Dirtbags’ head coach Troy Buckley, was the only blemish. Continue reading
It only took until Day Two for the list of undefeated Southern California teams to trim to just one (not including UC Santa Barbara, who has yet to play).
But the team with a still unblemished record is not No. 1 Cal State Fullerton or fellow top 10 squad, UCLA. Instead it is the USC Trojans, who have needed 26 innings to determine a pair of games with Northwestern.
USC isn’t the only team playing extra baseball early on. Five of the SoCal games went into extra innings this afternoon.

Washington State 9, #1 Cal State Fullerton 7 (11 innings)
The Titans clawed back from a 7-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but in the ninth inning when Fullerton had an opportunity to collect a walk-off win after J.D. Davis tripled with one out, the Titans couldn’t get the job done. Continue reading

Portland 1, #9 UCLA 0
Travis Radke and the Portland bullpen outdueled new UCLA Friday starter James Kaprielian (5 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 K). Shane Zeile had two of the Bruins’ four hits. Worse than the loss was the bad news delivered after the game: Continue reading
