It only took until Day Two for the list of undefeated Southern California teams to trim to just one (not including UC Santa Barbara, who has yet to play).
But the team with a still unblemished record is not No. 1 Cal State Fullerton or fellow top 10 squad, UCLA. Instead it is the USC Trojans, who have needed 26 innings to determine a pair of games with Northwestern.
USC isn’t the only team playing extra baseball early on. Five of the SoCal games went into extra innings this afternoon.

That’s because it’s Opening Day! The college baseball season officially kicks off today.
To get you ready for the opening weekend of Southern California baseball action, we’ve got where the teams will be playing along with an Around the Horn preview of series to watch.
And in this opening weekend preview, you’ll also get the preseason version of Shotgun’s SoCal Squad, your All-Southern California Team.
Teams wil be trying to start strong to open the season and there is an opportunity for teams to makes some noise. Long Beach State hosts Vanderbilt while No. 1 ranked Cal State Fullerton will welcome a Washington State squad that has a lot of potential.

Number 23 on our countdown is San Diego State junior RHP Michael Cederoth from Steele Canyon, High School. The San Diego native was a two year letter winner going 4-4 with one save and a 2.33 earned run average while tossing five complete games. He struck out 104 batters over 72 innings. He was named First team all-East County selection and to all-Grossmont Hills League second team. He was selected in the 42nd round of the 2011 Major League draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks but decided to head to San Diego State. Continue reading

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s director of athletics Mark Orr announced Wednesday that San Diego State pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Eric Valenzuela has been named as the 12th head coach of the Gaels baseball program.
“Eric brings a tremendous track record and level of experience that we feel is the perfect foundation to lead our baseball program to the heights we believe it is capable of,” Orr said. “We expect our baseball program to compete and win both on the field and in the classroom and Eric’s teams have been consistent high achievers in both of those areas. LOS ANGELES — Dylan Covey put together his best start of the season to lead San Diego past rival San Diego State, 6-3, in an elimination game in the Los Angeles Regional Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
San Diego fell behind 2-0, but rallied for five runs in the fifth inning with redshirt senior Austin Green striking the big blow. San Diego State opened the season by ruining San Diego’s grand opening of its brand new $13.8 million stadium, Fowler Park. The Aztecs wanted to finish the season in the same fashion when the two teams met Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the Los Angeles Regional.
Instead, it was the Toreros that got the satisfaction of putting out their city rival. Dylan Covey produced his strongest outing of the season to lead San Diego to a 6-3 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Continue reading

LOS ANGELES — Joey Wagman pitched eight strong innings, allowing only one hit after the fourth inning to pick up his school record 13th win of the season as Cal Poly defeated San Diego (35-24) by a 9-2 score Friday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Mustangs (40-17) took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning after Wagman escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the top half of the inning. After a nine-pitch sixth inning from Wagman, the offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by two-run singles from Brian Mundell and Jimmy Allen. Continue reading
Adam Plutko was unsure about the middle innings, but knew his experience carried him through the sixth and severth innings. The veteran right hander tossed seven innings, allowing only one earned run to collect his fifth career postseason victory — setting a school record for No. 10 UCLA.
The Bruins (40-17) defeated San Diego State 5-3 in the opening round of NCAA Regional action at Jackie Robinson Stadium Friday night. UCLA now advances to play Cal Poly at 6 p.m. Saturday evening after the Mustangs defeated San Diego earlier in the day. Continue reading
