NCBWA Names Pro-Line Athletic National Players of the Week (May 24th)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 22 today. UT San Antonio senior first baseman Ryan Hutson and Louisville junior second baseman Ryan Wright were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Cal State Bakersfield senior right-hander Mike McCarthy was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 16. Ryan Wright (Louisville)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 16 in our countdown with Louisville middle infielder Ryan Wright. The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native attended Homestead High School where he won three letters. As a senior in high school, he hit .453 with 14 home runs, 14 doubles, 43 runs scored and 45 RBI. In his junior season, he hit .452 with 10 home runs, 32 runs scored and 27 RBI and as a sophomore batted .440 from the plate with five home runs, 36 runs scored and 32 RBI. He picked up several awards during his high school days including being a Two-time All-State selection, Three-time All-Conference selection, and a Two-time All-Area honoree. Continue reading

Team USA falls 4-3 in extra innings to Cuba

Tokyo, Japan – Alfredo Despaigne hit two home runs including a walk-off three-run home run in the 10th inning to give Cuba a 4-3 win over USA in the gold medal game Saturday night at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Meiji Jingu Stadium.

Team USA defeats Japan to advance to FISU Championship Game

GeorgeSpringerUConn Tokyo, Japan – Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) scattered three hits over seven innings and George Springer (Connecticut) hit a grand slam as USA defeated host team Japan 4-2 in semi-final action at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Yokohama Stadium Thursday night. With the win, USA (16-2) will make its fourth-straight appearance in the FISU gold medal game when they square off against Cuba on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 5 a.m. (EST).

Team USA Advances to Semifinals with 11-0 Victory over China

RyanWrightLouisville Tokyo, Japan – Team USA scored a combined 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to an 11-0, seven inning quarterfinal win over China Tuesday afternoon at the V FISU World University Championships inside Yokohama Stadium. With the win, USA (15-2) advances to the semi-finals and will play the winner of Chinese Taipei/Japan on Thursday with a scheduled start time yet to be determined.

Matt Barnes leads Team USA to 8-1 Win over Canada

Tokyo, Japan – In a clash between a pair of unbeaten teams in pool play at the V FISU World University Championships, Matt Barnes (Connecticut) held Canada scoreless through seven innings and helped USA capture the No. 1 seed in Group A Monday night with an 8-1 win at Yokohama Stadium.

Barnes (3-0), who gave up just three hits, did not allow a runner to reach second base and finished with eight punch outs as USA improved its record to 14-2 on the summer. Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) made his fourth appearance working two-third of an inning where he allowed a run on two hits. Cal State Fullerton’s Nick Ramirez entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and struck out Nic Lendvoy to get out of the jam. The left-hander retired all four batters he faced which included a pair of strikeouts.

Team USA defeats Chinese Taipei in Extra Innings

NickRamirezCalStateFullerton Tokyo, Japan – Nick Ramirez’ (Cal State Fullerton) single in the 11th inning scored Ryan Wright (Louisville) from second base giving USA a thrilling 8-7 win over Chinese Taipei in pool play Sunday night at Meiji Jingu Stadium.

The game took two tie-break extra-innings to produce a winner, where both squads scored a run in the 10th before USA won the game in the bottom of the 11th. The International Baseball Federation’s (IBAF) tie-break rule, which was implanted in July of 2008, starts in the 10th stanza and each inning needed thereafter, base runners are placed on first and second with no outs.

Tokyo, Japan – Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) struck out a career-best 14 batters setting a new USA FISU single-game record as the Collegiate National Team (CNT) used the 15-run rule after five innings to record its first win at the V FISU World University Championships Friday afternoon over Sri Lanka, 15-0 at Utsumi Shimaoka Ball Park. Team USA defeats Chinese Taipei 9-1

Taipei, Taiwan – Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina), Brad Miller (Clemson) and Ryan Wright (Louisville) each collected three hits and helped Team USA to a 9-1 win and a split of the four-game series with Chinese-Taipei Wednesday at Hsinchuang Field.

Bradley, Jr. and Wright joined Alex Dickerson with a team-best two RBI, while Wright smacked his first home run of the summer on a solo shot down the left field line in the third inning.
