PROVIDENCE, R.I. –After one weekend of play, St. John’s holds the top spot in the BIG EAST with a 3-0 record. The Red Storm highlight a full weekend of action with a three-game set against 2011 BIG EAST preseason favorite Connecticut. The two teams met in the title game of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship with the Red Storm winning 3-0. Five other series will also take place this weekend, including a battle between the top offense in the conference (West Virginia) and the best pitching staff (Louisville). No. 1 Florida (10-1) used a three-run sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie on its way to a 5-3 victory over No. 24 Miami (4-7) to complete a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,114 fans at McKethan Stadium. The Gators had never been perfect against the Hurricanes in a three-game set in Gainesville and took all three meetings from the Hurricanes for only the second time in school history (Feb. 17-19, 2006). Sophomore Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) threw five scoreless innings and No. 1 Florida (8-1) raced out to an 8-0 lead through four innings on its way to an 8-3 victory over No. 24 Miami (4-5) on Friday night in front of 4,587 fans at McKethan Stadium. There was some fantastic baseball played on Saturday afternoon/evening between a couple of ranked squads. The highlight series of the weekend has been the Vanderbilt and Stanford matchup in Nashville. The Commodores grabbed the first game of the series on Friday night by a score of 2-1.
