Athletics Department CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty senior second baseman P.J. Jimenez (Yucaipa, Calif.) has been named the Big South Conference’s Choice Hotels Player of the Week, and Radford freshman Eddie Butler (Chesapeake, Va.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played May 3-9, it was announced today by the League office.

MarkPope #3 Georgia Tech 6 Georgia Southern 2

ATLANTA -Mark Pope picked up his sixth win of the season, allowing just two runs over 8.0 innings as No. 3 Georgia Tech defeated Georgia Southern, 6-2, Tuesday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.

With the win, the Jackets improved to 32-5 overall while the Eagles fell to 21-16.

Pope (6-0) joins teammate Brandon Cumpton to give Tech two six-game winners on the season.

ACC Recap for April 7th

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team was solid in all phases of the game in a 12-2 win over Radford Wednesday night at Davenport Field. Virginia racked up 16 hits in the victory, while the pitching staff limited Radford to just four hits and seven baserunners.

Whit Mayberry (Fr., Alexandria, Va.) made his first start at Virginia and earned his first career win. Mayberry (1-1) pitched five strong innings, allowing one earned run, three hits and one walk while striking out a pair. UVa’s bullpen – Chad O’Connor (R-Fr., Chesapeake, Va.), Tyler Wilson (Jr., Midlothian, Va.),Branden Kline (Fr., Frederick, Md.) and Neal Davis (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) – held the Highlanders to one hit and three baserunners over the final four innings.

2010 Big South Preseason Coaches Poll

CoastalCarolina CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the third consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University‘s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.  In addition, the coaches voted Chanticleers’ junior outfielder Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Conference USA weekend roundup

Half of the league’s teams were in action in the city of Houston this weekend, with the results impacting the conference race. Rice moved one step closer to a fourth consecutive regular season C-USA title by taking two of three games from UCF. Second place East Carolina entered the weekend with a one game lead over third place Houston as the teams met at Cougar Field and the Pirates extended that lead with a two games to one series victory over the Cougars. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ben Bunting went 3-for-5 with three RBI and tied a school record with two triples, and No. 4 North Carolina got eight strong innings from its bullpen in a 20-4 win over Winthrop Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Garrett Gore and Ryan Graepel also added three hits, as the Tar Heels (28-10) snapped a two-game losing skid with their biggest offensive outburst of the season. Continue reading

Georgia 6 Clemson 5

ATHENS-Top-ranked Georgia scored four runs in the third and held off No. 22 Clemson, 6-5, Tuesday at Foley Field.

Georgia improved to 23-3 and won for the ninth time in 10 games while Clemson dropped to 18-8.

Bryce Massanari and Colby May hit home runs and finished with two hits apiece for Georgia. Rich Poythress, the reigning National Hitter of the Week, went 2-for-4 with his league-leading 48th RBI. Continue reading

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, the coaches voted Radford senior infielder Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
