2012 Patriot League Preseason Coaching Poll Released

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Patriot League released the preseason baseball poll on Wednesday with both Navy and Bucknell tied at the top. Both teams were picked first with 39 points, while Navy received more first-place votes (five) than Bucknell (four). Army was picked just behind Navy and Bucknell with 38 points and one first-place vote, while Holy Cross took the fourth spot with 29 points and two first-place votes. Lafayette and Lehigh, respectively, rounded out the preseason poll, which is voted on by the Patriot League’s head coaches and sports information contacts. Continue reading


Longtime Bucknell Coach Gene Depew set to Retire

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Gene Depew, a 1971 Bucknell graduate who has coached at his alma mater for more than 40 years, including the last 31 as head baseball coach, has announced his retirement following the 2012 season. One of the longest-tenured coaches in Bucknell history in any sport, Depew enters his final season with 570 victories, more than five times the amount of any other Bison baseball coach. NCBWA Names 2012 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the eighth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Wednesday. Lafayette’s Jeff Snell Atypical Journey

Lafayette’s Jeff Snell wasn’t even the best player at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill but has become the best player for the Lafayette Leopards. Interesting enough, is the fact that he ended up walking on the Leopards baseball program while having only the fall of 2008 to prove himself. He has brought himself all the way to pitch in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League which is regarded as one of the best summer leagues in the country. Continue reading


Holy Cross releases 2012 Schedule

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team has released its 2012 schedule, announced by athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr. and head coach Greg DiCenzo. The squad will play in 49 total games starting with a trip to College Station, Texas, to compete against the reigning Big 12 champions, Texas A&M, from Feb. 24-26. Continue reading


Army Releases 2012 Schedule

Army baseball head coach Joe Sottolano released the Black Knights’ 2012 schedule this week. The rigorous slate features 19 home games at Doubleday Field, including three Patriot League series.

Army will open its season the third weekend of February (17-19) as the Black Knights travel to High Point, N.C., to face High Point in a three-game series. The team will then make the trek to Washington, D.C., for a three-game set versus George Washington the following weekend (Feb. 25-26).

Big East looking to Expand

The Big East conference is looking to “aggressively pursue” expansion according to commissioner John Marinatto after a five hour meeting with league presidents on Sunday. It was the first time that the league presidents have met since Pitt and Syracuse announced on September 16th that they will leave the Big East to the ACC.  Continue reading


From the Hardcourt to the Diamond

American University’s Stephen Lumpkins was a 13th round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals in 2011.

Interesting enough, Lumpkins hasn’t played baseball in the last two years since American doesn’t have a baseball program. The 6-8 225 pounder spent the last three years as a member of the basketball program averaging 13.5 points and finishing second in the Patriot League with 8.2 rebounds per game.  Continue reading
