Patriot League Recap for Feb. 21st

Here is your Patriot League Recap for February 21st.

Game 1: Lafayette 2 Ohio 1
Game 2: Lafayette 10 Davidson 6

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Leopards began their 2009 baseball season with a bang, taking both games of a season-opening doubleheader in Davidson. Lafayette won a 2-1 decision against Ohio in the day’s first game and capped off the afternoon with a 10-6 win over host Davidson.

Senior shortstop Daniel Bierce led the Lafayette offense with five hits, including a two-run home run against Davidson, and added three RBI. Sophomore righty Zach Fritz tossed 6.2 shutout innings against Ohio and Corey Shea threw four innings of one-run relief in the Leopards’ second victory. Continue reading

Patriot League Recap for Feb. 20th

The Patriot League saw only three teams in action with none of the teams picking up a win.

Virginia 12 Bucknell 0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia pitchers combined on a shutout of Bucknell and limited the Bison to just four hits as the Bucknell baseball team dropped its season opener to the Cavaliers, 12-0, Friday evening at a chilly and blustery Davenport Field. Bucknell and Navy advance in PL Tourney

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) knocked in the winning run and Bison hurlers freshman Eric Jarrett (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and senior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) combined for a two-hit shutout as the Bucknell baseball team defeated Army, 1-0, to advance to the Patriot League championship against Navy next week. The Bison are now 24-22-2 and will play in the championship series for the second time in the past three seasons, while the Black Knights fall to 24-25. Continue reading

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After dropping the first game of Saturday’s baseball doubleheader, Navy starting pitcher Oliver Drake (So./Gardner, Mass.) tossed 7.2 quality innings to force a third and deciding game in the best-of-three Patriot League semifinal series against Holy Cross at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) went 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs while freshman Eric Oxford (Danavers, Mass.) went 3-for-8 with three RBIs and a double as the Holy Cross baseball team split with Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader, winning the first game 11-5 and dropping game two, 2-1. The Crusaders are now 20-25 (11-9 Patriot League) while the Midshipmen are 28-21 on the season (11-9 Patriot League). Continue reading

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy’s top-two hitters in the lineup, Renaldo Hollins (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) and Mike Guadagnini (Fr./Virginia Beach, Va.), combined to go 13-for-19 with seven runs scored on Saturday to lead the Midshipmen to a baseball doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Cole White scattered six hits in the opener, and Matt Fouch and Kirk Porter combined on a three-hitter in the nightcap as Army regained a share of first place in the Patriot League standings by posting a pair of shutout victories against Lehigh, Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field.

The Black Knights won the first game 5-0 behind the stellar pitching of White, then rode the dominant performances of Fouch and Porter to a 6-0 victory in the second game. Over the course of 16 innings of game action on Sunday, White, Fouch and Porter did not allow a single Lehigh base runner to reach third base. Continue reading

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball squad rode clutch performances by senior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) and sophomore Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) to a doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon on Depew Field. Wilson fanned 11 batters in a complete game shutout effort as the Bison defeated the Crusaders, 3-0, in game one, while Yoder registered a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth in game two, leading the Orange and Blue to a 7-6 victory in that contest. Bucknell, which is now 7-1 at home this season, moves to 17-16-2 overall, 7-5 in league play, while the Crusaders fall to 14-19 and 7-5 in the Patriot League. Continue reading
