George Mason 5 Towson 4

Towson, Md. – The George Mason baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon when the Patriots scored five runs in the first three innings and then held off Towson over the final six as Mason beat the Tigers, 5-4.

Mason scored in the first when Chris Henderson and Justin Bour hit two-out singles and Scott Krieger brought home Henderson with a single to left. Towson tied the game in the bottom of the inning behind a walk and a double. Mason took the lead for good in the second behind the game’s lone error. Continue reading

Jason Appel, UNC Wilmington Sr., OF

Appel batted .579 (11-19) with six runs scored and five RBI as UNCW went 4-0 on the road last week. The senior laced a two-out single in the ninth to give the Seahawks a 6-5 victory over VCU on Sunday, extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 20 games. Continue reading

William and Mary 9 Delaware 4

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Paul Juliano hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to help William and Mary earn a 9-4 victory against Delaware on a cold and rainy afternoon at Plumeri Park on Sunday. With the triumph, W&M claimed the series against UD and improves its record to 18-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

In addition to the grand slam, Juliano went 2-for-2 with five RBI. The Northfield, N.J., native also drew three walks as he reached base in all five of his trips to the plate. Senior Greg Maliniak also hit a home run, while classmate Tim Park went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Jeff Jones came up big with a 2-for-4 effort and scored twice. Continue reading

Hempstead, NY- Justin Wood pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and striking out six to lead James Madison past Hofstra in game two of a Colonial Athletic Association series Saturday afternoon. Trevor Knight had two RBI for the Dukes while Matt Prokopowicz contributed a single and a run scored for the Pride. Hofstra falls to 8-18 (0-11 CAA) while James Madison improves to (18-7, 11-3 CAA). Michael Kohn broke a ninth inning tie with an RBI double and Brandon Sizemore homered and collected four hits lifting the College of Charleston to an 8-6 win at Davidson and a sweep of its three-game Southern Conference baseball series at Wilson Field on Sunday. Continue reading

CARY, N.C. – Freshman right-hander Patrick Johnson and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout to pitch No. 3 North Carolina past Princeton, 7-0, Wednesday at Cary’s USA Baseball National Training Complex. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Western Michigan entered the game having scored at least 15 runs in three of its last five games, but McDonald kept the Bronco bats silent all afternoon. Continue reading

Old Dominion 8 UNC 6 (10 innings)

CARY, NC–Old Dominion University senior first baseman Brian Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) knocked in six runs to lead the Monarchs (1-1) to an 8-6 victory over second ranked North Carolina (3-1) Tuesday evening. This is the highest ranked team ODU has ever beaten.

North Carolina took a 5-4 lead into the top of the ninth. With two outs, in the ninth Cipolla hit his first homer of the season to right field to tie the game. After shutting down the Tar Heels in the bottom of the ninth, the Monarchs scored three runs in the top of the tenth. Continue reading
