LOS ANGELES — On the first pitch he’s seen this season, Notre Dame sophomore Kevin DeFilippis one-hopped the left field wall for an 11th inning, 6-5 walk-off victory against No. 17 Oklahoma in the Dodgertown Classic Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Ryan Bull led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on a passed ball and a deep fly ball before scoring on DeFilippis’ game-winning hit. No. 22 Notre Dame tied the game in the ninth inning before taking the win in extra innings as Oklahoma’s pitching couldn’t hold an early 4-2 lead.
To lead off the ninth, pinch hitter Phil Mosey hit the painted foul line in left field for a leadoff double. After Billy Waltrip couldn’t make a diving catch on a popped up bunt, he walked the bases loaded for the heart of the Fighting Irish lineup. He was able to get stud slugger Eric Jagielo to pop out, but Trey Mancini hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Hector Lorenzana had put the Sooners ahead 5-4 in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly after Kolbey Carpenter executed a perfect hit and run to put runners on the corners.
Garrett Carey had a two-run homer that put Oklahoma ahead in the fifth inning, but Jagielo tied it up in the bottom half of the inning with his own two-run blast.
