Steve Gillispie named Head Coach at Youngstown State

NCBWA releases National Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 29, today. Southeast Missouri sophomore outfielder Derek Gibson was named National Hitter of the Week, while Northeastern junior left-hander Kevin Ferguson was named National Pitchers of the Week. 2012 Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Poll and Preseason Team

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — After winning the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships a year ago, Austin Peay has been tabbed the 2012 preseason favorite for the 10-team league in a vote of OVC head baseball coaches. In additional voting Southeast Missouri State All-American senior third baseman Trenton Moses was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year while Jacksonville State senior closer Todd Hornsby was tabbed OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. NCBWA Names 2012 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

Former Morehead State star Taylor Davis succeeding in Minor Leagues

He is too short. He has a bad body. Like a scene out of “Moneyball,” former Morehead State catcher Taylor Davis understood the real and invented roadblocks that stood between him and his dream of playing professional baseball.

Standing 5-foot-10 and tilting the scale at just 200 pounds, Davis did not look the part of a prototypical catcher. A native of Jupiter, Fla., he fought the stereotypes and labels associated with being a catcher with a “bad body” from a young age. Continue reading

2011 CCBL All-Star Game Recap: East Division defeats West 4-1

The Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star is usually a showcase for the best college baseball talent in the country and this year was more of the same.

Taylor Rogers (Kentucky) picked up the win as he gave up a first inning run as Travis Jankowski (Stony Brook) scored the opening run of the game on a Eric Stamets (Evansville) bunt single. The throw to third base from first baseman Ben Waldrip (Jacksonville State) fly into the stands allowing Jankowski to score from second base. Rogers settled down though to get the next three hitters to keep it 1-0. Continue reading

Mike Murphree Joins Jacksonville State Coaching Staff

JACKSONVILLE – Mike Murphree has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at Jacksonville State University head coach Jim Case announced on Friday.

Murphree spent the last two seasons at Gulf Coast Community College, where he worked primarily with the hitters and also served as the Commodores recruiting coordinator, and helped the team to the 2010 Panhandle Conference Championship. Continue reading
