SIU-Edwardsville alum Clay Zavada’s Journey in the Minors

The New York Times has a great article about Clay Zavada’s journey through the minor leagues. He was selected in the 30th round in 2006 where he received a $1,000 bonus which was barely enough to cover his deposit on his apartment. After the 2006 summer, Clay’s father died leaving the families property to him. He ended up losing touch with the Arizona Diamondbacks who subsequently dropped his contract. He ended up finishing up his degree in the spring of 2008 and with some encouragement from a friend went to an open tryout for the independent league member Southern Illinois Miners. His performance ended up getting him a second chance with the Diamondbacks who ended up signing him in June. Continue reading

A 32-game home schedule that features 13 of the first 14 games at Johnny Reagan Field highlights the 2009 Murray State baseball schedule, announced by head coach Rob McDonald on Wednesday.

Fans will get plenty of chances to see the ‘Breds early at the friendly confines of Johnny Reagan Field. The season gets underway on Feb. 20 with a three-game home stand against South Dakota State. After a midweek tilt at Memphis (Feb. 24), the ‘Breds will host a four-game series with Illinois State (Feb. 27-March 1), followed by a midweek game against Arkansas State (March 3), four games with North Dakota State (March 6-8) and a March 11 game against Mississippi Valley State.

Eastern Illinois announces 2009 Slate

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Seventeen home dates in the month of April and five weekend series at Coaches Stadium highlight Eastern Illinois baseball’s 2009 schedule, announced by head coach Jim Schmitz.

Six- and nine-game homestands comprise a good deal of the April slate, and 17 of EIU’s total 22 games that month are to be played at Coaches Stadium. Eastern opens its home schedule Wednesday, March 25 vs. Illinois State. Continue reading

College Baseball Early Signing Period- 11-19-08

Six commit to Virginia Tech baseball in early signing period

The Virginia Tech baseball coaching staff announced on Wednesday the official signing of five players to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 school year, as well as the addition of one transfer from an SEC school.

The new signees scheduled to join the Hokies for the 2010 season include outfielder/first baseman Tyler Horan of Boston College High School in Middleboro, Mass., pitcher Joe Mantiply of Tunstall High School in Danville, Va., catcher Chad Morgan of Paul VI Catholic High School in Springfield, Va., pitcher/first baseman Patrick Scoggin of Douglas S. Freeman High School in Richmond, Va., and shortstop/pitcher Brent Zimmerman of Nova High School in Cooper City, Fla. Also joining Tech in 2010 will be shortstop Tim Smalling, a Raleigh, N.C., native who spent the past two seasons starting for the University of Arkansas.

Austin Peay baseball announces challenging 2009 slate

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team should get comfortable in Clarksville, announcing its 2009 schedule which features 28 games to be played at Raymond C. Hand Park, along with a pair of eight-game home stands on tap.

Austin Peay finished 2008 two games under .500 at 27-29 overall with a 14-12 Ohio Valley Conference mark. Head coach Gary McClure returns four position starters along with seven pitchers and will be looking to make a postseason run. To set up his team for success and prepare them for a tough conference slate, McClure has arranged for a tough non-conference schedule, but a heavy dose of home games.

Austin Peay State University’s baseball team played its annual Red-White World Series, Oct. 17-23, at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Red team won the five-game series, 3-2.

The Red team was led by pitchers junior Stephen Huff (eight innings pitched with nine strikeouts), sophomore Ryne Harper (5.2 innings pitched with seven strikeouts), senior David Vicini (8.1 innings pitched with 5 strikeouts) and freshman Jeremy Dobbs (2.1 innings pitched with seven strikeouts). The pitching staff for the Red team, which also included junior Scott Kuhns and Chuck Edlin, only gave up eight runs in the five-game series.
