Big East Weekend Preview (March 23rd-25th)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – This weekend marks the opening weekend of BIG EAST baseball conference play, with 18 games scheduled for Friday-Sunday. 2012 Big East Preseason Coaches Poll Released

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST last season, St. John’s has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2012 BIG EAST baseball championship by the league’s 12 head coaches.

The Red Storm received eight of a possible 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The coaches also chose St. John’s outfielder Jeremy Baltz as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named Louisville righthanded pitcher Justin Amlung the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Notre Dame releases 2012 Schedule


NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team’s 2012 schedule will include early-season trips to Florida, North Carolina, Texas and Louisiana along with BIG EAST road series at USF, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Villanova and Connecticut.

Notre Dame’s four BIG EAST home series will include games versus Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, St. John’s and Rutgers. The Irish home slate will feature midweek games against traditional non-conference rivals, most notably Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Northwestern. Top 100 Countdown: 98. Trey Mancini (Notre Dame)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today with Notre Dame sophomore first baseman Trey Mancini who checks in at the 98th spot on our Top 100. He is from Winter Haven, Florida where he attended Winter Haven High School. He played three years of baseball under head coach David Saliba. His senior year saw him hit .480 with 23 runs scored, 10 doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI. He was selected to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Baseball All-Star Game. Continue reading

USA Under 18 National Team 9 UNC-Wilmington 2

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Drew Farber homered and knocked in both runs as UNCW fell to visiting Team USA, 9-2, in a fall baseball exhibition game on Saturday at Brooks Field.

Team USA, backed by home runs off the bats of Jesse Winker and Joey Gallo, took advantage of six Seahawk errors in the field by plating five unearned runs. Continue reading


Dave Schrage named Head Coach at South Dakota State

Veteran college baseball coach Dave Schrage (pronounced Schrag) has been hired to take over the reins of the South Dakota State University baseball program, Athletic Director Justin Sell announced Tuesday.

“Dave Schrage’s familiarity with our recruiting area and his success in building programs like ours make him a tremendous addition to the Jackrabbit family,” Sell said. ” This was a very competitive search process which generated interest from a great pool of candidates from across the country.” Continue reading
