EVANSTON, Ill. – George McKinnon, a 1940 graduate of Northwestern University and the Wildcat head baseball coach for 20 seasons, passed away Monday at the age of 90.
McKinnon served as the head coach of the NU baseball program from 1962-81 and compiled a 304-391-6 record over that span. At the time of his retirement following the 1981 season, he was the school’s winningest coach in any sport.
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Paul Stevens today (Dec. 7) announced the Wildcats’ 2010 schedule, featuring a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
After playing games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Minnesota Twins) and U.S. Cellular Field (Chicago White Sox) last season, the Wildcats can add a visit to another Major League ballpark to their resume. The twinbill against UWM will be played April 28 following a 12:10 p.m. game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

PETERSBURG, FL – The schedule has been finalized and two state‐of‐the‐art major league venues have been added to the 2010 Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, event manager API Sports announced today. Doubleheaders at Dunedin Stadium and Bright House Field highlight a slate that features 30 games over three days, Feb. 26‐28, 2010, at current and former big league facilities in the St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla., area.
EVANSTON, Ill. – Jon Mikrut, who played at Northwestern from 2002-05, has returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the Wildcat baseball team head coach Paul Stevens announced Wednesday.
"We’re very excited to have Jon back at Northwestern University after being a player here and moving on to professional baseball," Stevens said. "We feel that he will have a strong relationship with our student-athletes. He’ll be in charge of infielders and hitters and I think that they will be well instructed and well prepared under his guidance."
Holy Cross head coach Greg DiCenzo has added Gabe Ribas and Jeff Kane to his staff for the 2009-2010 school year. Ribas comes over to Holy Cross from Northwestern where he served as an assistant coach last season. He has also served coaching stints with the IMG Baseball Academy, Bowdoin College, Frozen Ropes Baseball Academy, and Rock Solid Baseball. Ribas was a 14th round selection in 2002 by the San Diego Padres.

Goebbert led Northwestern to a series split with Purdue over the weekend, hitting .625 and slugging 1.000 while reaching base at a .700 clip to combine for an OPS of 1.700. In the Wildcats’ Big Ten opener on Friday, the junior went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run-scoring double in a narrow 4-3 loss. Goebbert led the NU offense on Saturday, going 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI on two doubles and a walk as the Wildcats exploded for a 13-4 victory. Northwestern scored in each of the five innings that Goebbert came to the plate in Saturday’s game, and his weekend performance raised his batting average 40 points. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Northwestern dropped a pair of games to New Mexico Saturday, falling in a 16-12 shootout in the opening contest before dropping the nightcap 10-6 at Isotopes Park. The Wildcats jumped out to an early four-run lead in the second contest but were unable to hold on.
